Sometimes can be a good idea but other times, it can be completley over the top.

Why do you think people try to censor others?


To either protect younger audiences from things that might upset or disturb them or to avoid people being sued. The South Park episodes with The Prophet Mohammad spring to mind.

Things like the News however I do not think should be censored unless the content really is too distressing for children to see. Kids these days have little to no knowledge of whats going on in the outside world.

Not that I was generally aware of. Does my parents turning over the channel during sex scenes count when I was younger?

I'm not a fan of it, but in some cases I can understand it.

Why do you think people try to censor others?

On an individual level, just because they don't like something. When it comes to the government, private organisations, etc., it's to create a favourable image, prevent certain things from getting out, often to legitimately not offend people, and sometimes deliberately brainwashing.

Have you been affected by censorship, and if so, how?

No. Unless you count things like getting sent out of a classroom because I said something a teacher didn't agree with, which has happened a few times. There are other scenarios but I haven't been effected in any major way.

[ X] No (at least not legal prohibition for kids to watch films rated R, for example. I should also say I think censorship mostly protects kids in certain scenarios. For example a censored internet may prevent kids from accessing websites with illegal activity.).

I should mention that I don't think any particular medium should be censored; it's about setting. It makes sense for schools to censor certain things, for news agencies and public institutions to not say things that would anger the public, spout hate speech, etc.

What is your general opinion on censorship?
Censorship is bad, mkay. Although having said that, I think the media should be mindful of what they choose to present. For example, I don't believe gore and pornography have a place on prime-time television. Not because the censors don't allow it, but because it might genuinely disturb some people. Just because you can does not mean you should.

To restrict people's access to certain information, presumably for the safety of those in charge of the censorship.

My school had a website filter so we wouldn't play flash games on library computers. We used proxies. Does that count?
