Lot of misunderstanding of "non-profit" in here.

Non-profit does not necessarily equal a charity. While charities are non-profits, not all non-profits are charities.

They can be any organization that uses surplus revenues to achieve its goals rather than distributing them as profit or dividends.

In the U.S. they are classified as 501(c) organizations. There are 29 subdivisions of that class:


501(c)(1) — Corporations Organized Under Act of Congress (including Federal Credit Unions)
501(c)(2) — Title Holding Corporation for Exempt Organization
501(c)(3) — Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals Organizations
501(c)(4) — Civic Leagues, Social Welfare Organizations, and Local Associations of Employees

This is what I was going to post. What most people think of when they say "non-profit" falls under the category of 501(c)(3).

That said, there are plenty of worthwhile charitable non-profits worth supporting.

I always thought "Black Lung Benefit Trusts" was hilariously specific to have it's own tax classification, but I don't live in a part of the country where coal mining is prevalent.

More money -> research = larger probability to find cure. PROBABILITY. There's enough good ground on the earth to feed people. It's the money that's missing to harvest it in a decent way.
