neither, you are not owed a reply or acknowledgement, conversation is a privilege not a right, especially online or via text

This.

No one is obligated to respond to you and your presumption that they are is the only discourtesy that's taking place here.

The first one seems ruder. But for all you know they could have been distracted by something hugely important and so can't reply.

They seem to be essentially the same thing to me

When people don't respond and I need a response from them (for work or something along those lines) I try to talk with them in person since they can't just be like :| if I talk to them face to face. If that isn't possible I go around them and talk to someone else who can help or I go above that person and try to get in touch with their superior

edit: And if we're talking about personal relationships, if someone regularly does not respond to me I'll just stop talking to them.

I agree, my response was incorrect. There are indeed social and business situations where someone may be obligated to respond, but I think we often conflate this to all situations.

"Hi, how are you" in many locations will get you nothing but a strange look, a response is not a given. (And in some places the response you do get may be less-than-genial...)

But as noted, I was incorrect in my initial response, as there are indeed situations where one is obligated.

The first, definitely. That way you know that they know you've seen the message, you just couldn't care less if they know that you're ignoring them.

The second option, at least you're taking their feelings into account and pretending you don't know they've messaged you.

The second option makes me feel like I'm an idiot and it takes more effort to ignore someone that way

I know because I have deliberately avoided opening messages before

That shit is hard

it's quite rude to message someone at a rate that they feel they need to ignore you sometimes

if it's something important and they're just being a flake (business OR personal settings) I avoid giving that person any further responsibilities

When I'm passive aggressively ignoring someone I make sure I've seen the message so I'd probably go with that

Both are the same, really. However, once opened and clearly read, a message should be responded to - at least to avoid angst for the sender. It can be frustrating and confusing.
