Learning by ear
I've been playing for about 3 years now but never learn songs by ear. I know I should but I wouldn't know where to start, does anyone have any tips of good songs to practice with for a beginner

MT's only "suggest me a song" thread
Something simple with only a few chords and\or a simple melody. Nursery rhymes are a good place to start.

I normally listen to what the bass guitar is doing to find my bearings, as the bass guitar is usually hitting the root notes for most of the chord progressions. Then it's just a case of filling in the blanks from there.

I'm the same.
I found easy place to start is Jack Johnson, simple slow songs with the guitar easily heard. Just pick an album and work through it or whatever, i'm halfway through one of his albums now, my ear is shit but this is surprisingly easier than i thought. |

just learn music you enjoy. if you've already learned a handful of songs from a band, you probably have an idea of what they're doing in most of their songs anyway, especially in rock/metal and that's always a great springboard.
