How can I improve my finger tapping?
Tapping is one of my weak points. I can't finger tap with my left hand very well(my fretting hand) nor can I do tapping with both of left and right hands :P
So how can I improve my finger tapping skills? Buckethead and Tosin Abasi(two of my favorite guitarists) use lots of finger tapping and I'd like to be able to have the ability they do. My friend can tap very well(but, no offense to him, sucks at pretty much all other aspects of guitar), whereas I've been practicing for months and it doesn't seem to be getting much better. Is there something wrong with how I'm practicing? |

I said months lol.
And idk, I'll usually play random stuff for awhile then I'll sit down and do some finger tapping stuff. Idk my practicing usually consists of what I feel like playing lol. Unfortunately, another aspect is that my two hand tapping almost always sounds like that generic 80s tapping sound. You know, megadeth used it, it's in eruption, it's the generic finger tapping riff lol. like 14h10h7 on the E string. I've tried making it sound darker but to avail :'( so how can I help my melody too? |

try doing lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs that will help to get your fingers a lot stronger

make sure you have the correct touch before you try to do anything too complicated, cuz that'll just make it harder to fix later. have you practiced both clean and distorted, making sure you can get the notes to sound uniform?

Idk what the correct touch is :P But yes I can do(albeit simple) tapping on clean guitar. I can only tap on the high E and B strings and I can occaisionally get a good sounding tap out of the lower strings. |

If you want it to sound darker you could try using diminished arpeggios and scales. The only way to get better at tapping is to tap, so I would suggest just sitting down and playing some easy, one string tapping licks and working your way from there. If your fretting hand has trouble with it, try building finger strength and coordination by trilling. Then just bring your picking hand into the mix. And start slow, that's important.

Most people have problems with pull-offs during tapping.
I'd work on your left hand first. Get very clean hammer-ons and pull-offs, and remember when you pull-off it's not just removing your finger from the string. It's almost like a mini plucking of it. Once you can do that clean, keep your left hand on a note, and use your right hand for the hammer-ons and pull-offs. Then start slowly combining the two. Hammer on with your right hand, and pull off with the same hand. Then hammer on with your left hand, and then hammer on with your right hand. Pull off your left hand whilst having your right hand still in the hammer on position, then pull off again. Repeat 9806787988 times. Daily.

Learn your theory so you can sit, look at what you're doing, understand why it sounds that way and stop doing it like that.

Stop being a theory nazi: I understand why it sounds upbeat and 80s. I just haven't found a riff that doesn't sound super 80slicious. Any other "learn theory, it solves everything" people gtfo. |

Obviously you don't know why it sounds like the 80s arpeggio tapping lick or you'd be able to not do that. It's really very simple. Why exactly would you not learn theory?

A couple of observations. 1. He must be cold natured, or the room he's in must be freezing for their to be a need to wear that heavy coat. 2. He's not playing the same huge guitar in the exercises that he's holding while he talks. Will otherwise process the information within the video. Thanks. |

Have you considered tap dancing lessons? I've heard that NFL football players will sometimes take dance lessons to help them play and maneuver better on the field. ![]() |
