Affordable Jazzmasters???

Well, I play a lot of punk and grunge, and was looking around for a jazzmaster. Unfortunately, it seems you can't get a "proper" jazzmaster (so not a blacktop) anywhere inbetween squier and classic player. Shall I get one of the squier vintage modifieds and swwap out the pickups or should I be looking at another brand?
I currently play a modern player telecaster plus, which I use for heavier music. I'm looking for something of similar/quality.

Yes you shall.

Seriously, I played a vintage mod. jag at the local shop the other day and I'll probably pull the trigger on one soon. They're so inexpensive, (and at least the ones I tried were pretty nice) you can spend more money on the best pickups you can find. Then swap out the bridge and you're set.

there is the new j. mascis sig one that isn't to expensive and is more correct. since jazzmasters are getting more popular i'm betting that fender will come out with a affordable (fender not squier) version.
