For many people it does, yes. It depends on who you ask.

As for me, my life having a sense of purpose is very important, that's just who i am as a person. So i give my own life a purpose by doing what i wish.

You're asking that question as if it's a bad thing to have a purpose.

This has kind of been brought up already, but I would be to selfish to do this, even if I know that it is right. Make it a hundred people I can save, and I'd probably do it.

Oh, I see. In that case, I suppose this question is directed at the people who said they wouldn't sacrifice somebody.

Personally, I think if someone has to invent a fantasy to make life worth living, then they are weak and pathetic. But that's not to say that I believe all religious folks are weak and pathetic, because childhood indoctrination and societal pressure are very powerful influences.

I think most people, theist and atheist alike, would not respect someone who is so consumed with other fantasies that they could not exist without them. Imagine if Christianity were replaced with the Lord of the Rings, and people were saying that without the lord of the Rings, they would have no purpose in life. Such an attitude is delusional and hardly worthy or respect.

I don't think so. I'm just questioning the value of purpose.
I am diagnosed with DPD, so it could just be the disorder talking, but I seek to understand what apparent meaning or purpose provides people with, lacking it personally. I am particularly interested in the relationship between identity and purpose.

I didn't mean to offend, and I'm sorry if I did.

I realize now that the actual question in my poll doesn't correlate well to the answers. Whoops.

Fair enough.

My purpose in life is to seek happiness, enjoyment and to be grateful. It's that simple. I don't think you can put a value on that, so logically cannot simply compare one to another.
