H&K Tubemeister 5 retubing

Hey,
I know it's possible to play with tubes and all but I know nothing on the subject.
What should I look for to give a less gain, more like marshall bluesbreaker type of sound?

Thanks for the response.

Since I never use very high gain (ZZ Top at the most), should I change the tubes or leave them as is and buy a Wampler PlexiDrive instead?

Also, which tube would be for power amp, and which for pre?

might as well try some diff tubes. it is cheaper than the wampler and you always need a few spares on hand any ways.

Can I put any tubes in right away or am I limited to certain types?

(Talking about the bias thing.)

you only bias the power section, but The amp you have is EL84's correct? If so it shouldn't need biasing. The preamp tubes(the little ones) are plug and play you may want to get 1 or 2 of each type of tube I listed.

JJ tubes are great value for $$

That 12bh7 shouldn't need biasing.

since it only has 1 preamp tube buy a 12t7, 12au7 and a 5751 to try out in the pre-amp. You'll be suprised how much you tone can change with a simple tube swap.

Thanks very much for the help, I still need to read on tubes.
I'll keep what you suggested further on my research to try and understand and make my mind.

I still don't understand clearly what are the tubes categories (EL84 VS 6L6) VS pre amp tubes and power amp tubes.

I believe all of the TM series amps are auto-biasing, meaning it will automatically correct it should it need to. I can't find anything written in stone about the TM5 though so it's really hard to be certain, I haven't seen anyway to bias mine then again I haven't had it completely apart yet either.

But one thing!

I believe Robbgnarly suggested I only change the pre amp tube, which suggests that I don't need to worry about biasing.

Thats correct no biasing needed on pre-amp tubes in any tube amp.

You have successfully made me understand pre amp tubes.

This said, what would be the impact tonally changing the power amp tube?
What should I get and can I avoid biasing?

Thanks

I honestly have no experience with the 12bh7 power-tubes or any (if any) sutible replacements.

Trust me get 1 of each of the tube I suggested www.eurotubes.com is a good site to order from. also look at dougstubes, tubedepot, the tube store.

I will definitely order a few pre amp tubes and try them out! Since I only have to replace 1 tube, it's not very expensive.
