Mesa Dual Rectifier with Marshall Cab...?
Hey people... So I have a Mesa Dual Rectifier amp and up til this point I've been using a 4x12 cab that was in the band room we were using, but its not mine.
now we are moving into a new band room and im wondering what kind of cab I should get. the thing is that Mesa Cabs are about twice as expencive as Marshal cabs and Im just not sure whether its worth it, especially because im a little tight on money. I would really appreciate some thoughts on the topic... what do you think? will the marshall cab do just fine or should I try and come up with the extra money. thanks, Kartman |

Marshall will do just fine.
But take your amp and go try some out. Find quick one you like best and then get a used one.

yeah the marshall should be fine.
which marshall cab are you looking at? i'm guessing the v30-loaded marshall would be the thing.

Check out Avatar Speakers. You can custom design your cab for about 60% the cost of the Mesa cabs. I have a Roadster head and an Avatar 4x12 cab. My cab was made to the exact spec of the Mesa cab with V30s and it only cost me about $600 vs the $1000 for the same cab. Only difference is it says Avatar instead of Mesa. You can pick different styles, colors, grills. And as a bonus the owner is awesome and very cool to work with.

Grab a used Marshall 1960av if you can. They go for super cheap used and are loaded with V30's which are industry standard for metal.

Im currently looking into these models: JCM MR1960TV / AX / AV Vintage Modern MR425 also... Im not looking for the typical metal sound. I'm looking for more of a vintage sound... not too much treble and mids. a little bassier I guess... inda hard to explain ![]() |

oh ok
what country are you in? GAK was blowing out the genz benz 4x12 with private jacks (one of eminence's greenback-style speakers- i haven't tried the PJ but eminence's GB128 is pretty nice, i don't see why the PJ wouldn't be, too) for £200. Assuming you're in the UK (so they don't hit you with a massive postage charge) that's gonna be hard to beat. I'd check with genz benz first to make sure they're plywood. I'm guessing they are, but it doesn't actually say. EDIT: yeah if you want a more vintage sound probably avoid the marshall AV (which has v30s) and bog standard A/B cabs (which have g12t75s). v30s have less highs than greenbacks or g12h30s, but they have tons of mids and are more modern-sounding.

wait didn't he say he didn't want the typical metal sound and not too many mids? i mean those harley benton cabs are great value (I have the 2x12), but you kinda have to want v30s for them to be great value

get the harley benton 2x12/4x12 and swap out one or two V30s for G12K-100s or G12-75s. very balanced tone.

Sounds like you want the AX.
An AX really shouldn't be half the cost of a Mesa cab though, unless you're in AU or something.

So I tried a couple of Cabs and the 1960AV was definitely the winner...
the AX has a great sound for the clean channel and it is very vintage sounding, but the treble just kills everything else once you pipe up the gain... might just be the way it interacts with the mesa, but it was a no go for me. I would love to get my hands on a harley benton to try it out because I keep reading rather good reviews, but they really dont seem to be selling them in switzerland... and I can't buy something before I've heard it over my amp... thanks for all the input though, peace |
