Need help learning a song by ear!
A good friend of mine, Tyler, passed away this March and over the winter he had recorded some songs. Christmas is coming up and I thought it would be nice to be able to play some songs for his family. The only problem is that he didn't write down his music, so I've been trying to learn it by ear, but I am not nearly good enough to do that yet.

okay, i'm not a pro myself, i've only just started taking lessons, because i'm self taught. what my teacher told me, was look for the lowest note in a chord, and the way to guess that is by playing a scale on guitar until you find the note it sounds like (eg the lowest note on an Em chord is an E), that'll give you the chord, do the same with the next etc. This should give you the chord progression. if he put a bass guitar into it, thats often a good place to start. personally, i find it impossible (i only learned it last week), so i'm not going to be much help :P

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.
The chord progression of the first song is G D C D C G D D G D Em B7* C G Asus4 C G D Em D C G D G D Em B7 C G A/Asus4 C G That's about it, I'm not too sure on some chords but it's a good start. *not sure about that, i'm not too good with sus, 7 and these other not so standard chords, but it's definetly B |

Here's what I heard, perhaps someone can correct me, not entirely sure
"I Know A Guy" Instrumental: E - C#m - A V (upstrokes): E - C#m - G# - A V (strummed): E - C#m - F#m - E V (3rd part) : ? - ? "No Cash" ... um maybe I'll get to it later/tomorrow...

The first few seconds of the first song reminds me of the Adventure Time theme song.

I would check with his family in advace that it is ok to do this... you might be trying to do the right thing but may upset them. Great idea though, in my opinion...

To find out the chord progression the easiest way is to first listen to the bass (or the lowest note). They usually are root notes.
