Recommend me a compressor pedal
I'm trying to do research and figure out what I should go for, but it's hard because apparently 99% of people use them for reasons I don't care about.
I don't care about using one into a clean channel, I don't care about getting pop/twang/squawk, I'm not actively looking to increase my sustain. What I am looking for is something that will level out my single notes and chords, make everything the same volume. That's the primary objective. I'm looking for something with 3 knobs, more can be okay but preferably not less. I want to be able to control the level, attack and sustain. I think I would prefer something transparent over something coloring. New, so far the MXR Super Comp looks best. Used, I know the Boss CS-2 is very highly regarded, but would it be better than the Super Comp specifically for what I want? The only comp I've seen recommended universally (especially for use with high gain) is the Keeley 4 knob, but it's pretty expensive. Would really rather not spend that much even used, unless it really is exactly what I need. I've owned a Rocktron Reaction Compressor in the past, and I think I liked it, but I really don't remember, and have nothing to compare it to anyhow. Advice?

I'm using Boss CS-3, and it gets the job you want pretty much done.
Although it gives some funky feeling to whatever you play with it...

Is that a different sort of pedal than a compressor? Does anyone know anything about the Rocktron Big Crush? Tried to find more videos, but still can't find anything with actual distortion. Really annoying. Wampler Ego seemed nice, but pretty pricey, didn't see any used ones. Route 66 and Diamond Comp didn't really do anything for me from what I could find, but again can't find any videos of people doing what I want to do, so it's hard to tell.

CMAT MODS has 4 different models of compressors, 3 knob and 4 knobs. his pedals are cost effective and awesome. i would check em out.
HOWEVER i know what you need if you are on the cheap. i know because my comp does just what you want, and i stopped using it because it doesnt give a good squashed tone or sustain. guyatone ST-2. i bought it used on guitar center for like 35 bucks, and its a fairly solid pedal with silent / clickless switching (metal switch but smoothly moves with no click, like a love pedal). it evens out the notes / chords very well. in fact, thats why i had it was to play rhythm in a large band and it helped me give a balance sound in the mix to account for players variations however, i also wanted a comp to do that and other things and it really doesnt. so i took it off the board. but for what you described it does that very well. i am actually considering selling it (isnt GC used gear expo today? might drive down there.

Try out the MXR Custom comp. It only has the level and compression knobs on the outside, but it has two trimpots on the inside to control the attack and the high end trim. I used to have the supercomp, and I find the Custom comp is a lot quieter.
The Xotic effects SP compressor is another really nice compressor for that smooth, even compressed lead sound. |

I really like my Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone...it's nice and quiet, and I would think it would do what you want it to do. I picked up mine for about $90 used.

The Custom Comp seems nice. I hate internal adjustments so much though. Just make the box an inch longer...
I may get a Guyatone ST-2. Not really any videos, but I've read in multiple places people saying it does what I want it to do.

I have one, it is pretty cheaply made. I'd avoid it, it adds a ton of noise to the signal

any compressors do. the guyatone will add noise if you crank it. the normally way i did, it didnt add enough noise to get to me or anything.
but yeah like i said, you aint gonna sound like the guitarist from genesis or a chicken picking star, your just gonna have even note volumes.

Honestly, I found that you don't need to make many adjustments. Quietest compressor I've played.
