Trilling Faster
Any suggestions here?
I've been doing the same drills (trilling up/down minor pentatonic patterns) from a book I've been using, and I can't seem to speed up, and my hand starts to cramp up partway on descending back. Any suggestions on positioning or anything at all?

Relax more, use less movement. Practice what you're going to end up playing, just make sure you practice it really well.

For me, it worked really well to get fast with economy picking. Try looking at sweeps too.

I would suggest practicing on any single string something like this
E--5h6p5h6p5h7p5h7p5h8p5h8p5h7p5h7p5h6p5h6 Then try moving it around E|-5h6p5h6---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B|----------5h7p5h7---------------------------------------------------------------------- G|--------------------5h8p5h8-5h6p5h6------------------------------------------------5h7p5h7- D|---------------------------------------5h7p5h7------------------------------5h6p5h6---- A|-------------------------------------------------5h8p5h8-----------5h7p5h7------------ E|------------------------------------------------------------5h8p5h8------------------- Try doing it slowly and give yourself the challenge to play The Trooper by Iron Maiden Sorry the tab came out wrong but I hope u get the idea Last edited by NecroComet : 02-15-2013 at 10:20 AM. |

You have a metronome? Just take it slow. Speed is a gradual thing, your body has to physically develope.

What is your current metronome setting and what subdivisions are you trilling?

i find that for the fretting hand, it's easier to get speed if you use something closer to a classical positioning (pad of thumb on the back of the neck) versus the one you use for rock/metal vibrato (hugging the neck with your thumb/forefinger). you just have to get used to the less stable feel.

I always come back to this.. but you should learn some Black Sabbath solos. Iommi uses lots of trills when he's just shredding around a pentatonic scale.
17:13 is particularly interesting.

Trill up and down the neck with a bunch of different finger combinations. There's nothing specifically great about it other than that it makes you trill a lot and with a bunch of different fingers. I think he also went in to some stretching trills like doing 7-9 but with your index and middle fingers rather than the more natural index and ring.

Start with the good ol pointer and middle till ya cant then to the next. F'in genious and my god does it work. Been using this for Nine years and has never let me down.
+ You can cheat and do the Father Gibbons way. Ex. Start at the 9th fret G-string (3rd Finger) then have your (1st Finger) Ready behind it at the 7th Fret. Pick or Flick the G ringing the 9th let go letting the 7th ring out and slide finger 1 to the 9th fret and repeat. (You can do this anywhere its just an example) I do this cause my wrist sucks. Kind of cool looking "cheap trill" as i used to call it. Now i call it "Beard Trill" for obvious reasons.Never had to type examples before ever. Sorry if it makes no sense.
