Do you feel like your music is pointless and means nothing?
I mean, you write songs and what not, but you just play them to yourself. Nobody hears them. You're not in a band. Your guitar playing is going nowhere.
I'm 30 years old. I spent 4 years with a stupid chick who hated proper music and gradually eroded my passion for playing guitar. I'm gutted every time I think about that period in my life. I wasted those 4 years. Now I'm with a chick who is so supportive it's untrue. And I've finally found somebody who digs my stuff and is up for getting a band going. I feel stoked but at the same time feel like I've missed the boat and wasted my youth. I don't even really know where I'm going with this but just wanted to vent a little. Humbug!

Excuse me? She didn't like anything outside of pop stuff and tried to change everything about me so I'm sure you'll understand if I don't have a very high opinion of her.

It's great that you found a partner who's supportive of your music, it's essential for a musician. My girlfriend is also the sound person for many of my gigs so it gives us a chance to get out...a lot
![]() No need to complain about the past, look to the future and have fun. You can play music until you die. I sometimes think that I "missed the boat" as the first half of my 20s involved a whole heap of drinking, failing in university and sometimes not playing guitar for months at a time. At some point I pulled it all together, got through uni and within 3 years my calender was (and still is) completely full with gigs. I'm sure with some effort on your behalf you'll get to the same point.

maybe you should quit guitar, you're playing an obsolete instrument that no real woman wants to listen to

Good for you. If she enjoys your music it isn't obsolete. Does she play an instrument too?

She tried to changed who you were, and music was an aspect of this? That I can understand. Her not liking "proper music" (what ever the hell that means) is just judgmental and elitist. But I'm happy that you got a girl that supports you. We all gotta have those "requirements" in a girl before we take her seriously.

I dunno, it bothers me when people just don't get music. I see where you're coming from. I don't really care about people liking any particular genre anymore, but if music is doesn't get to your heart, then you probably aren't someone I want to spend any time with.

I don't get what in those 4 years makes you feel like you wasted them? As long as you wrote music and practiced guitar, you gained experience, which isn't a waste.

I don't care if my music gets heard or not. I like writing it or playing it, and thats enough for me.
Even worse is writing classical music, because absolutely no one listens, and its a lot harder to write. But I do it because I like doing it. If you like doing it than what's pointless about it?

Every artist follows their own path. it is not the audience or success that should drive. The true artist is driven out of a need to create.
Keep going. You will be fine. |

I play gratuitously violent death metal my music has no point or meaning nor do I care. People have told me I should play a less agressive more accessable type of music that more people can relate too I'm 6'6" and 300 lbs I'm not going to be a pop star or "alt" rocker god anytime soon based on my looks alone, besides I really hate playing that type of music anyway. I play what I want amd don't give two shits what anybody says about it.

My point of view is this : I love music, I love writing it, I love playing it, I love recording it and I love listening to it.It's even cooler if someone else enjoys what I've done

I just didn't do much guitar related stuff at all. I used to get it in the neck if I wanted to do anything on my own. It wasn't healthy. Just regret the fact I didn't get into a band etc. and have an established setup by now as a result.

So why would waste MORE time worrying about something you can't change? The idea of having "Wasted your youth" at age 30 is pretty absurd. |
