ASG Hybris 100 watt high gain amp prototype build

So I have finished prototyping a 100 watt 2-channel amp head for Artist Series Guitar that we are calling the Hybris. Sharing some pics here.

This amp is geared toward the high gain crowd, and our goal was to create an amp with an original circuit design that had a vicious high gain channel as well as a sweet clean channel. We wanted to keep the control set simple (and we needed to keep it simple to meet the target price point) and have a very straight-forward amp.

Each channel has independent gain and master volume controls. The TMB tone stack is shared, but works very well for both channels. The amp also has global presence and resonance controls to control power amp EQ.

It accepts 4, 8, and 16 ohm outputs, has a series tube buffered effects loop, and a footswitch jack on the back panel.

On with pics!

After the initial circuit design, I actually started by designing the chassis in CAD:

Front and rear plates were then designed using CAD and Adobe Illustrator. A friend of mine with a startup engraving business fab'd the plates for us:

Engineering drawings were sent to a local machine shop where the 12 gauge aluminum chassis was CNC'd and laser cut:

This first prototype was to be turret board construction for ease of swapping out part values in the tweaking phase. Once the chassis was in hand, I began designing the circuit board layout:

Once the layout was finished, the turret board was fab'd:

Continued on next post.

Next, assembly of the amp chassis began:

Then came time to do initial fire-up and begin testing:

For the enclosure, the headshell was made out of baltic birch ply. But I designed metal front and rear enclosure panels in CAD. These panels were fab'd by the machine shop and powdercoated matte black.

The ASG logo was cut out of the front panel and backed by a piece of frosted lexan so it could be back lit with red LEDs:

And here is the final amp assembly!

Overall I'm very pleased with the amp. I was very successful in achieving what we wanted to achieve with it. I'll be in the Artist Series Guitar booth at Winter NAMM for the official launch of this guy!

It looks and sounds great, but in the last two pictures, I can't tell if it's really tall, or if it's kinda stubby.

It is not a full size head.

Looks purdy Craig.

It's a relatively small form factor. 21.5" wide by 11" tall.

Looking at the size of the chicken heads and the height of the tubes in the rear pic should provide a little perspective.

Wanted to post a couple videos here. I got the opportunity to hang out with Patrick and Jeremiah from Demon Hunter last week so they could demo the Hybris. Here are a couple of videos from that. The first is simply playthrough footage, and the second is them sharing their thoughts and opinions on the amp. They have unofficially stated to us that they are interested in running this amp as their main rig! More to come on that...

Thanks, glad you dug it! No plans for a lower wattage version at the moment. This model alone will be pretty limited. But things could always change.

Here's a couple more videos. First one is from our launch at Winter NAMM. We had appearances and performances from the likes of Demon Hunter, As I Lay Dying, Death by Stereo, Jason Freese of Green Day, PDP, Phil Miner, Murder Death Kill, Cypress Hill, and more!

Here's a video Rob Chappers did with us:

And here's a video demo by Johnny Hiland!

Thanks!

The guitar side of ASG (Artist Series Guitar) and the amp side (ASG Amps) are actually two different entities. Vijay is the sole owner of Artist Series Guitar, and he and I are co-owners of ASG Amps which combines my engineering with his branding. So I am not technically affiliated with the guitar side of the house.
