I actually thought I was horrible at singing, but after lots of pressure to go up and sing, people said I was good and asked me to sing again.

I personally find the key is to pick songs that kind of fit your voice. I mean, if you have a deep voice, you wont want to sing rush, but maybe some stone temple pilots

Regardless of whether you're trolling or not, and whether or not you do sing well...

If other people say you sound worse than you think you do, really concentrate on/practise actually listening to your voice when you sing. I'm not talking about pitch, which a lot of people focus on but is arguably easier to control - I'm talking about the tonality of your voice.

Most people can learn to sing in tune fairly easily, but learning to control your voice and shape it into different tones is much more difficult (for me/people I've spoken to, anyway) and a lot of people will sub-consciously hear what they want to hear/are aiming for, tone-wise, instead of what they actually sound like.

Singing into a mic, through a PA, helps while you're still new to the concept of hearing yourself properly, as you hear less of the vibrations in your head that give a false impression of the sound leaving your mouth. Another key thing is finding your voice, in the sense that you aren't trying to put on an accent you aren't used to (many people try to sound American, even if they come from other countries and don't even speak English as a native language!) because your natural voice will typically dictate what your singing voice is most comfortable with - the exception being cover band singers, who are able to imitate the sound of other vocalists but I would argue they probably have their own voice which they could do a lot more with if they were singing original songs.
