Hi, I am looking for an amp as a student that has not a lot of money. I have been playing an electric guitar (strat) for a year without an amplifier (but have a 10$ guitar link for my computer (ebay)). So I practice often unplugged.
I mostly play low volume, clean tone, like hendrix style, mayer, frusciante and others that could challege me, I love that style. I would go for a blues junior but for now I'm in school and I'm looking for a cheaper solution. I was looking for a Fender super champ on classified adds sites and I saw this: Vox Valvetronix AD30VT-XL for 120$ (CAD and USD are the same at the moment) What do you think of it for the price? Do you suggest me to wait for the super champ? Do you suggest me another amp that I could get used for less then 250$? Thank you for your help! Last edited by s-h-a-w-n : 12-03-2012 at 04:37 PM. |

One would think that for a Strat tone you'd be better off looking for a Strat
![]() Assuming you have a Strat style guitar, well, I'd say a Valvetronix is a solid choice for cleans and low gain stuff (owned one myself) but you could perhaps snatch a Fender Pro Junior used. (or new, I dunno how much they go for). It's basically a Blues Jr with less controls unless I'm mistaken. Or a Vox AC4TV (can be had new for 250 I think)

Just a quick addition to the Vox AC4TV suggestion - if you go that way, try & get the head & cab version (AC4TVH & V112TV). As you're after cleans, it's got a bit more headroom than the combo versions.

i'd say skip the vox cab altogether. far as i'm aware it's not plywood, and you can get decent-sounding (certainly with a speaker swap) plywood cabs for no more than the vox cab. Actually probably a fair bit less than the vox cab- I don't know what US pricing is like, but I could get the vht special 6 1x12 plywood cab on thomann for like £80, while the vox cab is £135. That's the price of a speaker upgrade (if you stick to eminence legends or WGS, anyway)...
there might be a massive colour clash, though, if that matters ![]()

I'd highly recommend a used Epi valve jr. Bluesy fender ish tone at apartment volumes are its strong suit and the go for bout $100 in the US.

Thannk you, I just saw that this valvetronix is a model for metal... I'm not going to buy it I think...
I am keeping an eye for your suggestions in used instruments. By the way, what do you think of the Super champ? |

![]() awesome is maybe a bit strong, but for the money it's pretty nice. and it is fendery. Quote:
i don't think the valve junior is anything like a fender. Unless the v3 version made it massively brighter (which i doubt, but i guess it's possible).
