If I've got an FX unit that can, say, emulate the tone of a Mesa dual rectifier, when playing live should I just put that through my 1x12 combo that I use live - as opposed to emulating the tone of said amp through a 4x12 cab (emulated) then through my combo?
I hope that makes sense.
Just trying to figure out if speaker emulation is negated or not when used through a real speaker.

It's usually best to turn off cab emulation if you're using a 'proper' cab. The emulation usually sounds weird through something it's trying to emulate.

it does make sense.

speaker emulation is usually not bypassed. you should bypass it in this situation.

It's not negated by the speaker, it's compounded actually. So even more low and high end are rolled off, and you get a weird extra focused, but boxy sound. Disable the speaker emulation when you use a real speaker and cab.
