Rockerverb mk-ii 50w vs. Jvm 205h vs. DSL 50h vs. Thunderverb 50w
I've been playing for 5+ years and I'm looking to buy my first tube amp. I've narrowed it down to these 4. My band and I play a lot of Blink 182, ADTR, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Offspring, Pierce the Veil, Tonight Alive, Four Year Strong, Rise Against, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, and Sum 41 songs, and most of the music that we've written is reminiscent of this.
We play 1 or 2 gigs a month and I need an amp that I can get a decent tone with for both practicing and playing live. I know these amps are probably louder than what I need since my band only plays at small venues as of now, but I'm also under the impression that wattage isn't everything. I'm also planning to get a 2x12 cab to go with whichever of these I choose if any. The only one of these amps I've tried so far was the Dsl 50. When I go home for break next week I'm going to try out which ever amps seem most recommended on this thread. If there are any other amps you would recommend for me please let me know. I would be most grateful for your opinions regarding these amps. Last edited by tmmrwtheworld : 12-04-2012 at 10:25 PM. Reason: post layout |

Cleans don't have to be perfect, as long as they're not terrible I'll be happy lol.
Also, I'm under the impression that the Rockerverb is a class A amp, and therefore shouldn't need biasing when replacing tubes, is that right? |

^ yes you need to manually bias the Rockerverb. I have a blog in my profile that details how to manually bias an amp with a probe and a multimeter.
Why are you strictly down to those 4 amps? what is your top end budget and where are you located? What 212 cabs are you looking at?

the rockerverb didn't sound too crash hot doing those levels of gain to m either. although it sounded amazeballs doing balls out gain. the lower gain stuff and cleans left plenty to be desired. TS, all those amps you listed are nice, you need to go out and give them a go and decide which works works best for you and your other gear.

Wat. Cleans on the Rockerverb are some of the best I've heard in any amp, period Can't really comment on low gain stuff, cause I was only interested in how brutal it could get, but I'd imagine as an Orange, it's no slouch ![]()

The rockerverb high gain can't be beat. Gets your balls shakin. In a good way. I used to play an Engl Screamer which has amazing cleans and now i play a Matchless Spitfire which is again probably hard to beat when it comes to cleans. I think the thing i liked least about the cleans on the rockerverb was that there was no EQ to dial out some of the bass and throw in a little more high end.

I have a deeply buried lust for a Rockerverb mk.II, but I seem to be doing ok with my TH30.
Quote:
I think that's one of the changes between the mk.I and mk.II... they added a full EQ to the clean channel, dialed back the reverb, cleaned up the effects loop a bit and they changed the power tubes to EL34s. ... Wait, were you talking about the Rocker 30? That one didn't have EQ on the cleans I believe... Last edited by Trisonic77 : 12-05-2012 at 11:53 PM. |

Thanks for all the input everyone it definitely helps, my budget is 2000 for both the head and the cab, looking at getting an orange ppc2x12 i think. I narrowed it down to these four amps based on both sounds i've heard online, live at shows, and artists who use them(which I know isn't the best way to do it but it only had a little input on the decision). Most likely going to go for used gear though, based on my budget. I'm going to check out the EVH 5150 iii as well^. Definitely going to go test out the rockerverb mk-ii at least if I can find one in my area. Also, is it likely that Orange will release newer models of the rockerverb series or a similar amp in the next year?

i doubt they will release new models. the mk II isn't that old and they fixed most things people didn't like, (like the no EQ clean channel).

Can you share with me where in NY you are?
With that budget you've got lots of options. I'd be happy to check your craigslist tomorrow to see what I can see but New York is a big place ![]() I will personally recommend a Splawn Quick Rod. You can get those and a nice cab within your budget. Also maybe consider the Egnater Renegade or Vengeance - I like both of those. Quote:
Without looking I believe that everything you've said is true. And yeah the Rocker 30 is an awesome amp but is somewhat limited.

Just looking at the newyork clist I see several amps I would consider.
I see a Ceriatone clone (not sure if heavy enough), a Mesa Mark IIB, a Hughs & Kettner Duotone, Carvin X100B, Mesa Tremoverb, Axe FX, Marshall JVM 410, Mesa Mark IV, Marshall Vintage Modern, Fender SuperSonic, Marshall JCM900 SLX, VHT Pitbull, Marshall DSL, Marshall 6106, Egnater Tourmaster. http://newyork.craigslist.org/searc...800&maxAsk=1600
