How fast should a good guitarist be able to play?

Bpm? 150? 160? and great ones? 200? more?

^^^ That's probably about right. Great guitarists are defined by melodies and songs, not how fast they played.

It depends on what you want to do. Being able to play fast doesn't mean anything if it's not musical. Many guys who play super fast actually have horrible time if you slow it down. Take Grant Green for example. He never really played anything super fast, but he's one of the big legends of jazz guitar because he played so musically.

Also, as Nietsche pointed out, it's often harder (and more beneficial to your rhythm) to play very slow than very fast.

That being said, if your goal is to play shred or thrash, (not quite sure about the metal lingo ) it makes sense to put some emphasis on speed.

As fast as he needs to so that he successfully creates the correct atmosphere and conveys the right emotions for the song.

Only as fast as he, or she, needs to play; no faster.

Well it really isn't speed alone that makes you great. That's the correct answer and I'm betting some other guy will post that too, but since I feel that concrete answers in MT are so rare these days, I will say that it depends a lot on genre. A good blues/reggae guitarist doesn't really have to be able to play faster songs than 140-150 BPM, but good for a shredder is more like 200+. And of course everything in between. What do you mean by good btw? Good enough to be in a band? Good compared to other professional musicians?

As fast as me. Maybe some day, after a lifetime of dedicated practice, you can get close to that. It's an admirable goal.

How fast you play should not be the focus of your playing. It is important, but at the end of the day, which guitarist is going to play better, one that can play at 200BPM with no originality, or one that can play at 80 BPM but have musicianship?

Why? Have you just got the metronome out and realized you're only at like 140 - 145 or something?

Yeah, you're not good yet, then. Sorry.

How about this...

Fast enough to play Van Halen songs if that's what you want to play.

Fast enough to play James Taylor songs if that's what you want to play.

Fast enough to play Yngwie songs if that's what you want to play.

and so on...

and so on...

A guitarist is never too fast. A guitarist is never too slow. A guitarist plays at exactly the speed he means too.
