This line of reasoning was pretty much the only good reason for Iraq too, the problem was it went too far.

Yeah but with Syria there is an organised movement that has been recognised by several countries including U.S. allies, so I think it would turn out differently. This is scary though. |

How do these f*cked up people end up ruling foreign countries? You'd think one in every few despots wouldn't also be a total lunatic just from a statistical point of view.

I hope Ali stays safe (and everyone else too, obviously). Also, how likely is it that other countries would step in here? Wouldn't the vetoes from Russia and China complicate matters? Not only that, but I recall Russia having air force bases there, so would they be willing to let that go over this?

I'm not knowledgable enough to add anything of intellectual value, but I will say that my thoughts are with those in Syria and I hope everyone stays safe.

Well, if chemical weapons are used then I think the US will have to intervene. And if Russia and China don't like it, well, then we got WW3 just in time for the ultimate winter solstice.

I've gotten so used to seeing people in the Pit say the U.S. should mind its own business in foreign affairs over the years here, that the comments in this thread really suprised me. Should the U.S. get involved this time? Why now, if we shouldn't have elsewhere in the past? Maybe we shouldn't get involved. Its not like anyone ever appreciates it. Even the Syrians will mf us and protest after we help them (or probably bomb an embassy of ours to show their hatred). Not flaming, just curious what the Pit thinks about U.S. involvement in this and why its suddenly a good idea. Can't have it both ways ya know.

I would think the US would intervene under normal circumstances, but this one doesn't appear to be quite as simple (for lack of a better way to put it) as Iraq. I'm also not too worried about China here. Yeah, there's a chance that they would take Russia's side if something like that were to go down, but they're also heavily invested in the US. So yeah, I can see it being pretty interesting if something goes down on such a major level, especially if China gets involved since I don't really see the US trying to wage a ground war against China due to the stupidly high population there. All that being said, all we can really say for certain is that this is a lose-lose situation for everyone involved at this point. It's a shame that it's come down to this.

I don't think it's really a black and white thing. I think there's certain situations where it makes sense for outside sources (not necessarily the US) to get involved (in the case of genocide or mass killings in general), and there's times where it shouldn't be done (the situation with Iran since the 50s, Vietnam, etc). It's really hard for me to say whether the US (or anyone else for that matter) should step in here. Sure, this situation is ****ed and I want it to end, but are we (not just the US, but everyone else whether they're involved or not) ready to deal with how bad it could potentially get. I don't really think it's the US stepping in that causes the protests/embassies being destroyed, it's what goes on during/after as a result of the US stepping in. But yeah, this whole thing is screwed. ![]()

Theoretically shouldn't every country that's signed the chemical weapons convention be like "Hey Syria stop messing up our UN conventions bro"
Syria has not signed it, but Russia and China both have.
