Why do you think that we get suicidal ?

Hey people, here's a question that came to my mind : Why does our brain get the idea of suicide ? What I mean by this is that, rationally, "we all know" that suicide isn't actually a "solution" to heal a depression, since it brings no relief/we cease to exist, and I'm guessing that thought came through everybody's mind at some point (well most people I know think that way). The best way "would" be to fight back until you get out of it.

What I'd like to do is open up a discussion, is suicide just a senseless impulse or could it be somehow rational ? (influence of religious beliefs, philosophy and whatnot)

I personally think it is an impulse, not rational, but biological. I used to remember reading about animals committing suicide, if we go from the hypothesis that animals only act on instinct, there is no blaming their judgement since they don't really have one, their brain would just tell them "Hey, I'm not feeling happy anymore and I don't like it, let's die" just like that, without going through the mayhem of thoughts that we humans tend to. But do these thoughts matter or does the biological instinct tend to overpower our rationality and lead to death ? That, I do not know.

Let's go, don't shy away from details.

That's what I was thinking too. Natural selection gets punched in the face ? Somehow, it's gonna have to retaliate.

Let's not turn opinion into facts, why do you think that there is a "blissful" nothingness ? If you consider reincarnation you may just pop up in a shittier life.

Ps: what the hell is TS ?

The idea of ending everything is such a comfort, at least to me, as I've been suicidal for the past 3 months. Insecurities, people, money, and everything else in life can feel like it's all just too much at times. The fact that it could all be gone, that you don't have to deal with anything anymore is what I think drives people to suicide. I don't know what first makes people think of it though

Well, I would never do it, but I would say people who believe they have failed as a father/mother wife/husband and life in general. Most people want to get a decent job, get married and start a family. If you've been doing that for 10-20 years and everything starts to fall apart you might feel as if you truly have failed. It makes it even worse if an addiction like alcohol is involved

If I had a good job and was married for 15 years and had a kid, I would be pretty damn depressed if I lost my job, my wife left me and my daughter/son did not really look up to me or like me

Well as one of the leading psychoanalyst in the field of human suicide, they do it because they are sad.

You think that people would rather go for the "no sadness" solution than try the more difficult "happiness" one ?

I think there's something more than just happiness when you become suicidal, you're kind of like hitting the bottom, and since you intensively think of dying, you eventually get closer and closer to ending... So isn't there a "near-death experience effect" here ? You know, a total change of perception once you get out of the pit, making you perhaps a better human being able to attain a level of happiness that "normal" people can't ?

Scissor: I think you misunderstood what the thread is about.
