Speaker problems

I currently have a carvin legacy cab loaded with V30's and greenbacks in the X pattern.

they are all 16ohm and wired in parallel, making a total of 4 ohm load.

But whenever i put my ear to the speaker it sounds muffled a little bit. It doesn't sound as sharp as people describe v30's to be. It seems the Greenbacks have a sharper sound than the V30's. which is odd.

I've gone through 2 amps, and it had the same effect on both.

Is there something wrong (partially connect speaker or something)

just wanted to double check.

for background info. the amps are Carvin legacy, and Granger 2204 jcm800.

PS: Carvin legacy isn't muddy, i dont get why people say that.

thanks.

are the v30s broken in? if so, i'd say that's normal.

gbs should have more treble bite than v30s. v30s have a massive upper mid peak and rolled off/tight bass that gives the impression that they're bright (especially if they're not broken-in), but they actually have the treble rolled off when compared against lots of other speakers.

EDIT: how do you like that combo, by the way? I tried it in a 2x12 but not in a 4x12 in an x pattern.

Also i will try cranking the amp to half way, maybe thats when the character of everything comes out yeah?

If that happens i probably need to play a little louder to break the new greenbacks in as well as V30's

just wanted to make sure i didnt make an error in wiring the cabinet as i did a restoration job on it and restored it myself and wired also.

EDIT: sorry i thought you said they ARENT broken in. Yes my guess is that they are, there the old made in sulfolk England. So my guess is that they are.

The speaker combo sounds awesome at band/gig levels, little muffled at low volumes obviously.

yeah. i mean it's hard to say from here whether you've wired it up properly or not, lol. But yeah, v30s have less treble than g12ms. what you're describing sounds more or less normal, in other words.

If you were playing quiet enough that you could put your ear against the speaker and not have the whole world sound muffled for the next week, then that's probably the issue. You really don't get the full response of a speaker until you get it moving with a decent amount of volume. Most speakers either sound really muffled, really thin/tinny, or both when your amp is turned down.
