Solo help
Hi All,
Can anyone tell me key/ scale i'd need to use to solo over a progression of: E, F#,B,G#,C#,E,C#,G# I'm a noob at this stuff...

C# pentatonic minor / E pentatonic major. Probably ninja'd.
Oh, this ^ is if you meant those were the notes. If you meant all major chords then it sounds like it resolves on G# but as you probably know, you won't find one scale that perfectly fits all these chords. G# minor (or pentatonic minor) would work with just a couple of possible clashes on the G# major and C# major chords. Last edited by Jehannum : 12-06-2012 at 04:32 PM. |

It could be in E major, B major, A major, C# minor, G# minor, or F# minor, depending on context.
Could you provide us with more context? If I play the notes in succession with no rhythm, it sounds like it resolves to B, but I can't say for sure that it's in B major without more context.

Your wording is pretty misleading. I wouldn't call that progression. If you want to use those notes, they are in E major. Find the chord progression, find the key center and you'll know in what key you are. Use E major scale if the key is E major. You don't usually solo over a sequence of notes. Those notes are part of chords. Usually there's no melody behind the solo because solo is the melody (unless you are having two melodies at the same time but then I wouldn't call it a solo).
