Unformulaic bands/series/franchises

We all know that there are plenty of bands, games, movies, etc out there that rely on giving you the same thing over and over because it's a safe bet. Zelda, Saw, Pokemon, Cannibal Corpse, Nickelback spring to mind.

But what are some series/bands/whatever that release something different every time and remain popular and successful?

They went from indie with simple chord riffs to some experimental shit and then back to a simpler album.

Games wise, I generally don't think there are any. Sequels are usually pretty similar in gameplay.

Every album is a different sound. They still retain that Americana feel, though.

They had a slow evolution of punk metal to full-on experimental psychedelia with their albums.

Yeah I can't think of any game series I wouldn't call formulaic.. Hrmmm

Really have to disagree there. It's all in the same ball park to me.

The only stark difference is their later work to Sink or Swim

The Metal Gear games can be pretty damn different. They all more or less remain stealth games, but they play completely different from each other. They range from typical stealth (Metal Gear Solid) to small mission pseudo squad based (MGS Peace Walker), and from card battle (Metal Gear Acis) to straight up hack n' slash action (Metal Gear Rising).

And as previously mentioned, Soundgarden. Also Mr. Bungle.

Neil Young. He has done so much different music. Also he's one of the few musicians that consistently puts out amazing music. Sure, an old band like the Rolling Stones were great in the 60's and 70's but their new music is terrible. Neil put out some amazing albums 40+ years ago, and he's still making great music like Le Noise and Psychedelic Pill.

Radiohead. Their early days were a total ripoff of R.E.M., then they gravitated to 90's grunge with Creep. With The Bends they began to develop their own sound. Ok Computer was a further progression of their guitar-driven sound. From Kid A onwards, it's hard to tell what their next album would sound like. The music they make is what they want, not what people have enjoyed in the past. They definitely aren't a band that focuses on the past. I saw them this year and they only played 2 songs from the 90's.

Maybe it's because I'm a fanboy, but I think all of Pink Floyd's albums have a unique sound to them. And for the most part they were all quite popular.

It's hard for games not to follow the opposite path, though. They're generally based around a certain plot or idea and are often bonded to it inseparably. Same goes with book/movie series.

Some bands/artists that come to mind for me are Tool, My bloody valentine, Swans, Floyd and zepplin. They all seem/seemed to break new ground with each album.. no two albums, IMO from any of them sound exactly the same. I wouldn't say they are all incredibly popular though, but all are definatly successful in their own respects. I feel like there are alot more bands and artists than I listed that do the same...

I loved Daisy and it was definitely different than Devil and God.

Maybe i'm a bit biased, because they're my favorite band, but I do think that Alice in Chains's albums are all quite different from eachother.
