First pair of monitors
Studio preparation is going pretty well.. Just got a killer dealer on Superior Drummer and 2 expansions. Check it if you're in the UK: http://www.andertons.co.uk/virtual-...drummer-20-.asp
Anyway, in the near future I'll need some monitors... As soon as I outgrow using headphones and feel it's limiting my mix abilities. I have a good pair of monitoring headphones as of now. Will I be able to get something good sub £200? Oh and one last thing... I'm using Reaper. There are some built in comps and EQs but they're pretty basic, are there some good freeware ones available?

Equator D5's are cited as the best low end monitors but I think they fall just outside your budget.
I forget which user it is exactly but they've had great luck with the Behringer Truth range. Apparently monitors are one of the things that Behringer have got right. People tend to say the KRK Rokkit's are good for the money, but the bass is incredibly over hyped. There's not much wrong with the ReaEQ stuff tbh. Sure it doesn't look too proffesional, but it sounds fine.

For slightly more than your budget you can get a pair of Yamaha HS50Ms, I have had a quick listen to them, and they sound pretty decent, and know people who have got some.

Ah okay that's cool then. Read through all the stuff, all the options look good. I guess I should say I'm mainly looking of clarity, kind of an unforgiving sound and not loads of boosted bass. I may need to think about the room I'm in though, because my speakers will be about 4ft away from the wall...

I'm a big fan of the Behringer Truth B3030A, you can pick them up for around £220 new from Thomann, or cheaper used. If you want a quick 'upgrade' to the stock Reaper plugins that's easy to use, with a nice interface and great quality, try installing the Kjaerhus Classic pack. Don't underestimate the plain old Reaper plugins though, they might be dull to look at but they're rock solid. Here's my pick of free plugins that are reasonably easy to get to grips with and sound great. COMPRESSION - Density MkIII - ThrillseekerLA - Antress Lost Angel / Seventh Sign - Kjaerhus Classic EQ - Pushtec 5+1A - Kjaerhus Classic - BootEQ MkII REVERB - Glaceverb - Epicverb - Ambience SATURATION - TB Ferox - TesslaPRO TRANSIENT SHAPING - Flux BitterSweet II - Dominion

^ that sucks about the D5s being so much in the UK, they are a great choice for a low cost option in the US. probably still worth the increased price, but not the deal they are here. the truths are getting great reviews around here though, it sounds like i need to try a pair.
and the kjaerhus classic plugins are a very good choice for something free. my link no longer works, saving that one for future use!

As luck would have my dad had a really old pair of Tannoys in the attic, they'll do the job for now.
I was wondering how do you guys angle them? I was experimenting with having the angle towards me, but I think it's actually better having them almost straightforward in line with my ears. It's annoying, move your head an inch and the whole sound changes. I've been using headphones too long... Thank you so much for the plugin list, really appreciate it! I'll start off with the Reaper ones and experiment from there, I was mainly concerned about having a rock solid comp and EQ. As they're not things you want to skimp out on.

to get a full stereo spread, i think the speakers need to be six feet apart at a miniumum. i tyypically just have them pointed straight out.
