Looks great, looks even better for a first build. I love the shape.
When can we start ordering them?

let's see... Wood 100 Hardware 85 Parts 45 Electronics 90 Finish 90 ------$410 I mostly saved money by buying pickups that had been damaged in shipping(they were new, but one of the mounting brackets had broken. I epoxied it back on with plastic repair epoxy) and wood from a local store. That maple top isn't AA-AAAA maple, it's actually $5 bargain-bin figured maple. The cool thing is that I still have enough wood for at least 1 more build. Quote:
Thanks! I'm sure it will be years down the road before I feel like I'm ready to start selling guitars. |

If you ever decide to go commercial, don't forget to figure in some kind of hourly rate- compare to skilled labor in your area- for your time in calculating your costs. That will help you accurately gauge how much to charge.

Wow, thanks greg! I think i have found the right trade for me. Took many years and many different attempts at other things. I'll definitely make a thread when I start on my next build, and use a better camera than I used in my last build thread. Quote:
Definitely. I didn't log the hours on this one, but I would guess it was probably around 500. I can see why luthiers say that there is no money in this. If I spend 3 months building a guitar like this and sell it for 3k, I'd make less than 1k month, and that's working over 40 hours a week. Lutherie would only be realistic as a second, low-paying job. I'll definitely be trying to build a CNC router in the next year though, so that should be pretty helpful. |

CNC, practice/task familiarity and multitasking all help speed the process I also think that what you're saying about prices and second jobs are key to the price differences between what American and UK luthiers charge: I know several American luthiers who sell guitars right at $1000, whereas the least expensive luthier I've seen in the UK was £1000. I know that all of those American luthiers have other jobs; I don't know about the Brits.
