You can tell a lot about a band by how they present themselves, so I'm going to say a decent amount.
When certain bands show up at the Gasworks, you can spot the terribad ones pretty easily by the way they dress.

^those guys arent ugly
a bit bulky, and not pretty boys, but they give an impression of being serious musicians and don't have distracting looks.

The Afros were 90 percent of the reason I fell for TMV. Same thing happened with Jackson 5, MC5 an Flower Travellin Band.

I agree with you, no-one wants some ugly-ass dude/girl up there on stage. I was very disappointed the first time I saw a picture of Joe Bonamassa. He's an amazing guitarist but god, he looks like such a loser...
