Getting faster

Okay, so I've been playing for a little over 3 years. I'm advancing pretty quickly I think, as I can play most songs. However, I'd like to get my soloing quicker and cleaner. I can play a few scales quite quickly, but I'm honestly getting bored just playing scales over and over.

How did you guys get fast? Learning songs out of your range? Could you suggest some songs to start with? I mostly listen to and play old school metal (Manowar, Maiden, Priest, etc), but I'm also interested in expanded my musical knowledge, so anything is welcome.

I seem to have a lot of trouble learning from tabs, as I can never remember them. When someone shows me, or I figure it out myself I can, but tabs never stuck with me. Anyone else have this problem? Should I just continue to try and learn stuff by ear?

Shallow and pedantic.

Make your playing better: more relaxed and more economical movements. You can't make yourself faster, you can only make yourself play better; playing faster comes from that.

Learning stuff by ear is a fantastically good idea, learning things from tabs isn't a bad thing though as long as you apply some knowledge to what you do. That said, there are ways of making tabs easier to remember like spotting patterns in everything and making sure you're intimately familiar with the sound of the guitar part before you try and learn the part physically.
R.I.P. My Signature. Lost to us in the great Signature Massacre of 2014.

yes, continue learning songs by ear.

as for getting faster, i pretty much agree with what Zaphod said, the "better" you play, the faster you'll play... at least i think it works that way lol...

One thing that you said struck me. Being familiar with the part before learning it. I used to play in a cover band and tried to learn songs before even hearing them more than once or twice. I think that may be the tab problem.
