stainless steel frets v.s. any other fretwire.

I am looking for opinions on this subject. I am wondering if an even harder material is worth looking int.
Cost also being an issue. What other drawbacks or additions would there be?

I imagine it would be a complete bastard to work with, and wear out tools in no time at all. Having not worked with it, that's just a guess though.

Saying that, I do like the idea of using stainless, but there are probably a lot more drawbacks than what I've just said. If they last as well as they're meant to, it's probably worthwhile, but I have my doubts.

I can't see many reasons to use it. It might be a harder material and last longer, but normal frets last just fine, if you ask me. Having not played them, I can't speak about them in terms of feel, but I would doubt they have any big difference tonally - probably one of those things where you wouldn't notice it if you weren't told, and that kind of stuff tends to lead me to believe that such differences are mostly in peoples heads more than anything.

I don't like Avenged Sevenfold anymore. I was 14 when I joined & the 6661 in the username seemed a great idea at the time. Sigh.

Stainless has a slightly brighter tone to it. Not much, but maybe enough to hear if you are looking for it. It is harder to work with. It can wear files out fast. It's best to use diamond files on it and most techs doing a refret with it will charge extra because of the time it takes to shape them and the chance of ruining a file.

I have stainless on my latest custom JEM guitar. Yes, harder to work with, but they will last a good three times longer than typical nickle-based frets. It's worth the added hassle and cost if it means a lot longer playing life before having to re-fret or do other things with it. There's also a nicer feel on the finger tips... playing seems to be a bit faster and smoother (could be in my head... not sure).

I used it on 2 guitars, and let me say... NEVER again. It was the worst experience ever. I wouldnt do another stainless fretjob for 1000$.

If you can deal with the massive amount of work it takes to cut, file, level and crown them, then its ok. but i dont think its worth it in any way.

So anything harder than stainless would be near impossible to work with.

Wow, that must be some hard stuff. I was considering trying it out, but it sounds like way more work than it's worth.
