Worst guitar sales you've seen?

New or used, craigslist, ebay, whatever.

I've been shopping around for guitars for about 1/2 a year and I'm amazed at some of the 'deals' on new guitars, or sellers on craigslist.

My area has many "Gibson les paul" for sale ads up, and they're always epi les paul special II's

I know buying guitars is just like buying anything else, and I want to hear/see some of the ads people/web sites have had up.

Craigslist in my area is the worst. They frequently have Schecter, Epiphone and Gibson guitars used for more than they cost new. An example is an SG Faded for around $700, when Sam Ash is selling them for about that price new. People think they deserve $240 for their Schecter Omen 6, or they list their Ibanez RG370 for more than it would cost me to get a used Prestige.

Maybe these people are assuming the buyer will cut the price in half before they can sell their guitar, but a lot of these people also say "serious inquiries only, will not budge on price" and act like this sale price they're giving is suuuuch a great deal.

Worse are the pawn shops and guitar shops that list their crappy overpriced junk on craigslist, flooding the listings with crappy starter guitars they want brand new prices for.

There's a dude on the Philly Craigslist selling a Jackson SLSMG for $1500, a dude selling an Agile Les Paul for $700 and a Music Man SUB5 bass for $400 (they go for $300 new)

Yes! There should be a way to filter those out.

There's always the "I got this for my kid and he never played it" ads wanting nearly the new price.

The worst ones arre the ones that ask that you pay the price you would get it new because they played it for less than 6 hours, and that lowballs would be ignored, even though they don't know what it's worth.

Or the ones that want $500 for a shoddy PRS/Gibson/Fender copy.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of lower end Ibbys people try to doll up to look like Jems and then sell for $$$.

I've seen a lot of guitar with the shit modded out of them going for way too much too...and I don't mean hardware upgrades. I mean modding headtocks, sanding off finishes, stuff like that.

Every guitar that they list is at least 40% over the book prices for mint and many of the guitars are damaged or even missing pieces.

I'm seeing a lot of Gibson Les Pauls listed on Craigslist for more than you can buy them new for. These are mostly recent models that were likely bought before Gibson slashed prices, and people are probably just trying to recoup losses, but still. It's a bummer for resale if you bought after Gibson cut prices, but I'm not paying the same or more for a used Studio Les Paul than I would pay getting one from Guitar Center. It's like people aren't even watching the trends in pricing, but really, come on.

Most of the time the Parents overpaid for Juniors piece of Crap pointy guitar theat they just "Had To Have" and then never played. They think since the price of everything else is going up,they can charge more too. Even though there snot nosed kid broke the neck and plastered it with stickers.

When I sell an item on Craigslist I usually ask a little more than I really want for it. That way the Buyer think's they are getting a "deal" whenI drop the price a bit.

I'm sorry. This is epic.

Q: Why take a 7 string guitar, replace the nut, botch the bridge so the strings do not sit over the pole pieces and pass it off as having 'built' a wide necked 6 string? This guitar was supposed to have 7 strings...Why destroy it like you have? 08-Dec-12

A: Hi Gibbo, Thanks for the questions: Fortunatly strings do not need to be directly over the pole-pieces of a pickup, or each time you bent a string sideways the guitar would go quiet, where if anything the signal intensifies slightly. Some pickups I have found the signal directly above the pole-piece is more intense, but often it hardly changes at all... and as I said bending notes is dependent on this. Why destroy seven string guitars? Ebay is awash with old seven string guitars that people try and eventually discard as not worth the agro; I buy these and make them into something different that suits some people, but I am not making a political statement about seven strings when I do it, just using them to make something that about one in a thousand guitarists finds useful. it sounds like you want me to not make my guitars because of some sort of religious reverence for seven string guitars... I have to confess that each time I get one to convert I do have a play with it before I start conversion work, but although I enjoy it and do get a bit better each time, I do find all those strings so close together is very hard for me to be creative on... even a six string has got too many notes for me to learn them all! I hope that explains what I am trying to do. Thanks Gibbo, Mark................

Q: Why is the nut filed in such a fashion? 03-Dec-12

A: Hello and thanks for bringing my attention to the photo I used, I had just that day finished the initial build and the light was good so I rushed out to get some photos taken. That nut looks wider than the neck doesn't it... I am looking at the guitar here now and can see I went back later and refined the shape of the nut as it is now flush with the wood. I should explain that I convert classical guitar nuts to make the wider nut... though a classical guitar nut as it stands is quite a bit wider than I need. Thanks, Mark D Phillips.......

I'm gonna ask him something. I want him to make a political statement that somehow involved guitars, God and poor customising.

It's very hard to learn 12 notes. Unless you know the alphabet, of course.

I love this guy.
