Why does my recording volume seem to be 'limited'?

Okay, so i have a Zoom G3 and recently realised that if i just use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack with a 1/4 inch jack connector, I can use this to record little demos and ideas to my computer.

But i've noticed that it seems to only be able to take so much, it can take soft clean playing no bother, but if choose an overdrive effect modeller, the sound seems to distort and fuzz when playing hard.

Could this just be because of the cheap jack i had lying around?

Would a better quality one allow clearer recording?

Because your computer's soundcard is not meant to handle the amount of volume the Zoom is sending out to it.

You need an audio interface, or at the very least, figure out how to pad the input to your computer.

I can change the zooms 'master level' which I presume is it's main output volume.
would that would help?
