newAMPday

Picked this nasty thing up the other day. Marshall JCM800 2203KK.
The thing is dead mint. Very little use, got it from the original owner who retired from playing seriously shortly after ordering this amp from Marshall.

You guys probably know the specs already.
Single channel JCM800 with Kerry King's Beast button which activates a noise gate and a boosted eq curve with added gain.

I love the feel of the amp. It's aggressive, but not harsh. Great clarity too at all gain levels.
Without the Beast engaged it is pure rock bliss. Throaty Marshall grind. The Beast adds a nice mid boost and high end cut. It gives the amp mega tight and fast tracking. I like setting the pre gain to about 75% and putting the Beast level control around the same. I get a great classic Marshall roar with a modern gain response level.
Again not all Slayer here. For that you would probably max the Beast level and pre gain. It gets really evil and pissed off sounding that way.
I also really like the eq sweep. The midrange dial sounds great particularly, as does the presence.
The gate is pretty phenomenal too, every amp should have one. No choking off notes and no noise slipping through either. Transparent too, unless it's at an extreme setting, which isn't needed.

I love the KT88's so far. They have such a powerful punch. I'm running the amp through a Krank 4x12 with V30's which handles that punch like a champ.
I don't really mind the tribal graphic. In low light it all but disappears. The metal etched graphic on the front panel is kind of cool actually.
The only thing I do not like are the flimsy feeling dials. The newer JVM410's and even the JMD1 have the chassis mounted, stiff, secure feeling dials. I wish this amp did too. Don't know what Marshall was thinking with these.
Maybe I can get my tech to fix that.
Otherwise, I'm very pleased. I haven't owned a Marshall in years, and almost got a JVM, but I don't want or need that many options. This is more my style. Plug in and play. Just straight up rock, with metal at the push of a button. No pedals whatsoever. Simplicity at it's best.

I thought those amps had KT77 not KT88 tubes.

Congrats! Beginning to appreciate the plugnplay simplicity of these Marshalls. How does it compare to the UL (KT88s)?

Yea, I thought KT77s were the typical alternatives to EL34s.

Yeah thanks everyone, I don't see these 2203KK's very often for sale used so I had to grab it. I tend to do that with amps that are priced right or hard to find locally.

Ippon, My VHT actually has 6L6's, not KT88's. So I can't compare the two in that aspect. The UL is voiced differently all together. The Marshall is easier to play, while the UL makes do really work for the notes. Great amp. Super aggressive, low noise, full range on the lead channel gain knob. Not mush or sloppy attack.

Robbgnarly, the 2203KK comes with KT88's. My understanding is that KK wanted huge, fat and clear headroom. That is definitely what these tubes give you. They sound great. You've heard of amps with a sledgehammer punch to the chest, well this amp is more like a wrecking ball to the chest!
From what I've heard; KT77's are bigger EL34 replacements. KT66's are bigger 6L6 replacements.
KT88's and 6550's are similar, very big bottles with lot's of headroom. They won't break up as much/easily as the KT66's or KT77's will.

R25VT, was it a pic of my amps you wanted to see? If so, that can be arranged...

Tom 1.0, I'll do a clip when I'm feeling inspired enough. Soon hopefully.

311, I've been trying to come by more often. But life, work and amps seem to always come first LoL!

I thought KT88's were what he had been running in the 2203 he had been gigging with.

HNAD!

What about the JSX makes you keep it despite all those other awesome amps you have? Just curious.

I bought the JSX new when it came out for $1500. For a long time it was the best amp for high gain metal I ever played. So tight, so clear, so aggressive. It always stomped all my friends new high gain amps that they consistently brought over to compare. That amp actually shocked them and made them a little angry because a Peavey out performed their boutique handmade high dollar amp.
My ENGL can compete with it for that compressed modern ultra high gain, but I still love the JSX. For the low prices they sell for used now, I have no desire to get rid of it. It's too good and has never given me any problems.

I'm not a big Kerry King fan, but I'd pick one of those up in a heartbeat if I found one for a good used price.

Yeah, I'm not a KK fan either. I like thrash, and Slayer is cool and all though.
But I sound like me when I play this amp. Not KK. It's pretty easy to get an awesome boosted JCM800 sound from the amp. If you dime the gain and the Beast Assault dial then you will get that mega brutal KK sound. I have the gain set to 6/10 and the Beast Assault to 9/10. Both dials are pretty sensitive, so every notch counts. I'm getting a great hotrodded Marshall metal tone right now, with surprisingly nice picking dynamics.
Plus, I can just turn the Beast off and get a great standard rock crunch tone.

Yes please bump this thread with pictures.

Ippon also has a good collection but for some reason will not show then in a decent group shot. So now we are counting on you.

You sire have an excellent collection. I love the fact you still have your JSX.

Not the best quality of pic, but here it is. My GH50L was on the floor getting a cleaning and retube at the time.

The Recto & GH50L go through the Randall 2x12 w/ V12 Legends @ 8 ohms.
The VHT goes through the Randall 2x12 & the Mesa 4x12 w/V30's @ 4 ohms.
The ENGL goes through the Krank 4x12 w/2-V30's & 2-Vet30's @ 16 ohms.
The Soldano goes through any cab.
The Marshall goes through the Krank 4x12 @ 16 ohms.
The 6505 & the JSX go through the Mesa 4x12 @ 8 ohms.

I also A/B/Y any and all combinations of the rigs when I feel like it.
The VHT rig with the ENGL rig is great. All three cabs in use with the two amps at the same time in stereo.
