I think the people that attack the article are people who don't like to make such broad generalisations of human interaction, which is very curious because usefulness to the tribe is pretty much the most ancient form of human interaction there is. This doesn't even have anything to do with western society, it's how ALL human cultures are. You're useful to the tribe/community/society/intergalactic space kingdom? Great, we like you. You're a big lazy slob who mooches off of others and can't do anything? Go fuck yourself. Despite how many people like to pretend that we as a species have risen above those basic views of each other, we, as a collective, definitely haven't.

It's a good thing. It gives us incentive to communicate and interact with others, work for ourselves and others, and bring the species forward.
