What is a good blues-y garage guitar?
hey guys i play lead guitar in a garage band (like the white stripes) and am currently playing with a strat, but it just doesnt have the look of The kind of music i play. I have all the major components to get the sound (ie. Big muff, tube screamer, tweed deluxe) but it just looks tacky. I kinda was looking for maybe a semi hollow MIJ 60s guitar like a harmony or teisco within $300-$500 range. Thanks in advance!

They have very cool guitars and most of them are pretty cheap, have a look ;-) EDIT: Just had a look again, the prices for the Airline line climbed up since last time I checked, but you can still get some great Eastwood ones, such as the Sidejack ![]()

In regards to the look, the Tele shape would suit garage bands especially well in my opinion. Seen it quite a lot too.
Maybe a used MiM would suit your needs and in that price range, from what I remember you could be in luck. Plus it fits the sound. ![]()

Not semihollows, but...
Take a look at Richmond Guitars Canada, a Godin subsidiary. They are well made, and have visual aesthetics & features you might like. Used versions of their guitars are right in your budget. The entire line: http://www.richmondguitarscanada.com/guitars.html The Empire- bridge HB & neck low-noise singlecoil (used): http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Stor...697-i2789698.gc The Dorchester- 2 Lace Alumitone HBs (used): http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Stor...463-i2772644.gc The Belmont- bridge SD '59HB, SD lipstick singlecoils in neck & middle (used): http://www.jimlaabsmusic.com/guitar.../prod_6115.html The Belmont Laurentian (new): http://www.amazon.com/Richmond-Belm...r/dp/B003C80RZU In your position, I'd go for either the Belmont or Empire for the tonal flexibility of the humbuckers paired with some kind of singlecoil. Reverend is another company worth checking out: quality manufactured, korina-bodied guitars, and their own nifty take on retro styling. The downside is price again- look for used ones, though- they're out there. There are a few semihollows in their product line, The entire line: http://reverendguitars.com/reverend/guitars.html Manta Ray 290 http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Stor...510-i2602020.gc Double Agent http://losangeles.bidbut.com/a,55,1...herman-Oaks.htm Flatroc http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Stor...026-i2844629.gc Guitars like the MR 290 (and other P90 axes in Reverends's line) will have a bunch o crunch for a nice raw garage-y sound, and their aesthetics are right on point. The HB/P90 mix on the Double Agent might appeal as well.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar Both of those seem like exactly what you want, but they might be a little expensive (I'm not totally sure what your price range is). I've been really wanting that Offset Special, and I almost bought one after trying it, but I really can't justify the cost or the fact that I don't really have a particular need for it right now. ![]() |

Yea, except he doesn't want a Strat and the first link is an offset Strat lol.
I agree with the second choice though.

If you look at the used market, they are in your range.

I dunno, he was only upset with the looks of a strat, and that one definitely looks very different from a regular strat. I would say the other one looks more like a strat anyway. It's gonna be really hard to find a decent semi-hollow for under $500 without going used unless you're okay with something like an Epiphone Dot. From what I understand though, you're looking for something with kind of a funky shape or vibe (as opposed to the standard 335 shape of the Dot). Check out this Hagstrom. It's a really nice guitar and the looks are a little "weirder" than your typical 335 copy: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar You could also check out this ESP. Although I can't attest to the quality, it has a pretty "different" shape: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar Just so you know, though, neither of those are "real" semi-hollows in the way that a 335 or something like that is. The two I recommended you are basically solid bodies with big chambers and f holes, while a 335 is put together like an acoustic (separate top, back, and sides) with a solid center block. Just something to keep in mind when you're thinking about what kind of sound you want. If you can stretch your budget a little bit (or go used) you should also look at some Italias. They're all about the offbeat designs. Some of their stuff is definitely influenced by that Teisco/pawn shop vibe. Still out of your range, but just so you can see what I mean: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...electric-guitar |

Along with the Epis, there are some Ibanez Artcore and Gretsch Electromatic semihollows/hollowbodies that are in that price range.

I'm a big fan of some of Schecter's more unique guitars.

The Dirtbombs are the best garage rock band on the planet and Mick usually plays a Strat.

Good people? I ask, because I'm kinda looking to buy a Belmont myself, and there aren't too many around in Texas.
One thing holding me up is that the dark burgundy color seems to go for several hundred more than the basic black (the hardtail only comes in 2 colors, the Bigsby ones only in Luarentian White), and, of course, the dark burgundy is the color I like.

There are two guys that work the guitar department. I forget their names, but the larger gentleman with long hair is very knowledgeable and does good work. The other guy (I think his name is Chris) I wouldn't really deal with.
However, if you're just ordering a guitar you know you want, it doesn't matter who you get. These guys ship things all the time. They're one of the few major orchestra instrument retailers with a brick-and-mortar store within 2 hours. Overall a solid shop.
