bought a marshall 1960a lead. what head should i get?
I recently purchased a Marshall 1960a lead loaded with two V30s and two G12T-100s and now i need a head. I currently have no budget, but if i could keep it under $1000, that'd be awesome. I play mostly hardcore/powerviolence, so i need something with bite/low end to it. I'm very new to this stuff, so bare with me. I've considered an Orange Jim Root Dark Terror, but i'm wondering if there are better or cheaper options.

Willing to go used?
IMO the Jim Root is just a Dark Terror with a 3 band EQ. No where near worth the jump up in price. Nothing wrong a good ol' 6505+ or a 5150 for hardcore stuff. They can had pretty cheap used, depending on where you are.

that's what i would get if i were buying today. once the ASG Hybris comes out that'd be my choice as well. |

and yes, i'm willing to go used. The marshall i scored for 350 used.
i've heard a lot of good things about the 6505. i might go that route. any recommendations for od pedals? i've got nothing right now. and what's a good price for a 6505 or 5150 used?

6505+ heads are worth around $600-$700 used
5150 iii mini heads I've seen go for about the same, sometimes more because there's such a high demand 5150 ii Peavey heads are quite cheap and are the same amp as the 6505, they go for $600 all day long. the combos are an entirely different story and since you've got a really sexy nice cab then I'm not gonna go into that. just get yourself a TS-9 to tighten the low end on whatever you get. |

The TS-9 is the Ibanez Tubescreamer, a very common, solid and good overdrive.
When you use it as a boost (level on 10, gain on 0, tone to taste) then it basically makes your guitar tone's low end tighter for chuggah chuggah or fast rhythms. |

Ok, sweet.
I'm thinking about going with a JCM 900 50-100 watt, depending on what i can get used after doing some reading. Will a good tubescreamer still get me where i want to go?

I'm not entirely sure what powerviolence is. What are some bands you want to sound like?

You can get a used VHT Deliverance 120 for a $1000 easy if you're okay with a single channel amp. The 60 watt version is a little less. Somehow I don't think there are lots of clean interludes in powerviolence but what do I know..

you might get awa with a JCM900 SL-X or Mk III but the dual reverb is a bad amp unless you mod it.
I'd go 5150 for that, or JCM800 which would be over budget. |

you will DEFINITELY need a boost or overdrive or fuzz with the 800 but it has that sag and crunch and midrange exmplified in that first clip. play one first if you can
and ultra violence and power violence ain't got nothin on monty python extreme violence. Last edited by ihartfood : 12-29-2012 at 01:45 AM. |

You can try and snag a (used) Marshall Vintage Modern head for under a grand. I got mine for $950 and the previous owner used it for like 2 hours and kept really good care of it, so it was a great deal imo. It definitely has bite and good low ends (of course, depending on ow you eq it).
Also, you should check out a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Peavey 6560. I hear they're pretty nice amps.
