Amp recommendations
Hi folks, I need some amp recommendations.
Here is the form filled out: Budget? - £450/£500 or less. Genres? - Blues, Blues rock, Southern rock, hard rock, occasional session projects in other styles, possible some metal from time to time when playing with others but I can get a pedal for this as it is not so vital. New or Used? - I dont mind. But if used I prefer to get it local, which limits options. Home or Gig? - Gigging, jamming with drums, studio, home, teaching (bear in mind I have a Roland Cube I can use though for some of these). Closest City? - Canterbury, Kent. Current Gear? - In sig. Some artists who's tones I like - Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, SRV, Joe Bonamassa, Angus Young, Keith Richards. Additional notes - I like fuzz pedals, so one will be paired with it, as well as some distortions. Must be portable, so nothing really chunky or heavy. I prefer a combo but that is not a rule. I prefer lower wattage or power adjustment. I will use clean tones, but not all the time. I like to use my guitar volume knob to adjust my sound. I like simple amps. 1 channel will be fine I believe. I dont like amps that take 100 buttons and 5 hours to dial a tone. What I have looked at - Fender Blues Junior III, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III, Orange OR15, used Marshall Vintage Modern (if one pops up locally), Marshall DSL, Peavey Classic 30, Egnater Tweaker (none in my area though).

I just tried the blues junior III and really liked it. It would obviously need boosting for some of the things I play. But it sounded great.

I call BS. those laneys can't be over your budget. they're discontinued and can only be found used. The vc50's normal going rate used is about £250, IIRC. The aor's (again, IIRC) is similar.
but if you want to go new (which is absolutely fair enough) it's hard to beat that traynor.

If you like dirty cleans the egnater rebel may work well for you. Lotsa good tones in a rebel and it excels at classic rock tones. Its a simple, single channel amp but extremely versatile and mine gets along fine with a big muff and sd-1.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I only really want to go used if it is fairly local. Egnaters are not available in so many UK shops atm. But if I can find one I will take a look. Doubt I'll be able to try the Egnater or Traynor before i buy.

Never played through a classic 30, but I love my peavey classic 50 4x10.
Not the most portable amp in the world, but it's still lighter than my twin reverb! Not really suited for metal, but you can find them used for around $350. |

Try a Peavey Classic 30. You might be surprised. Great cleans, useful overdrive from early 70s to a brighter 90s crunch, takes all kinds of dirt pedals and effects well. It might be able to handle all of your tastes pretty well, accept for the stuff that needs a fuzz pedal.
I've played the amp myself, but these are decent demos.

The problem with "just getting a pedal for metal" is that most pedals for metal are terrible. The few very good ones run at least $200 a piece (Wampler, etc.).
If it weren't for that, I'd recommend the Vintage Modern, but if you do need to do metal on occasion, the DSL would be a better choice.

Canterbury's crap for gear. My recommendation is to go to Denmark St if you can. I think there's 4 music stores in Canters but none of them really specialise in guitar gear.
Also the Peavey Classic 30 sounds like it'll do good for you.

I've had a Peavey Valveking 50 watt combo for years now, and it's pretty sweet. The sound is rich and highly adjustable. I use it with music ranging from altrock and metal to funk, blues and jazz. I paid 400€ for it, if I remember correctly- so it costs a little less than that in pounds. Generally, a lot of online introduction videos for amps are crappy, and I recommend reserving an afternoon or two for going thru amps at music stores, under guidance of a pro. |
