Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a pickle. So the other day, I went into guitar center and spent about an hour and half playing the OR-15 through an orange ppc 212, at full volume in a sound proof room. The thing sounds so great, and is so ****ing loud for 15 watts. It was pretty close to as loud as my friend's marshall mg100 on full volume, believe it or not. Anyway, I was talking to a guitar center employee for a while (this guy knew his shit) and he told me that despite the dual terror being 30 watts, he was pretty confident in saying that the OR-15 was actually louder than the dual terror. Is this really possible, and if so, how?

In any event, I play in a loud stoner rock kinda band, and am trying to decide between the OR-15 or the dual terror. I can find either one of these heads used for about 590, and that's my budget. There will be times when we play venues where nothing gets mic'd up, like basements and practice spaces. I figure that if the place is small enough, I'll be fine wattage wise with either of these heads (judging by the volume capabilities the OR seems to have). And when we play larger venues in our area, stuff will be mic'd up. I love the tone of the OR-15, and I've essentially played a dual terror so I know what the tone is like (I've played a Tiny terror, and I'm assuming it's similar to a TT, which I don't like as much as the OR)...but which head is actually louder?

okay when an amp says 30W, it means that 30W goes into the amp, not necessarily comes out....well that's what I was told. It seems to me like you've already made your choice. Go for the OR, it's a great amp

Just as far as volume goes: you only need to get over the drummer if it's without a PA and if there is a PA, you'll be fine no matter what.

If the OR gets you what you want and can get over your drummer, get it. :-)

That isn't true. A 15 watt tube amp will draw more than 30W, not to mention amps are rated for their clean output, not the power drawing.

Also, if you don't believe me, you can see how many watts an amp draws on the back. The number will be significantly higher than its output wattage, especially in tube amps.

yes

now... a lot of the time a (tube) amp's wattage is little more than made up (people expect a marshall-style amp to be 100 watts, say). but yeah. as you said, a 15 w amp will often have a power consumption of 2-3 times that.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. I'm just you know, wanting to be scary loud in small venues when unmic'd and stuff. Which won't really have to be that loud you know? Depending on how big the room is. I'd like the guitar to be a considerable amount louder than the drummer, not really just making it over him you know?

Depends on your drummer for the most part, really. There are drummers that are relatively quiet and others that hit the drums as if they want to break them. You don't want to drown out your drummer either.

15W should be able to get you over a drummer (by which I mean enough although not too much, to fit in the mix) without problems normally, but don't expect cleans.

I think this might be the problem. Even the guys at GC who sound like they know what they are talking about still don't know what they are talking about.

If volume is your concern you could get by with the 15w with a big cab (4x12 etc). I'd probably go with the 30W DT since it has two channels.

Yeah... that sounds more like job for 50-120w tube through a 4x12. A 15W would really have to stretch to get you there.
