New Mobile Phone (UK) 2013

So my contract expires in 1 month and I have the choice to upgrade.

At the moment I'm with Orange on a 20.50 month contract with a HTC Desire.
that gvies me 300minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb of internet.

Im willing to spend 25 a month, I want to have at least 200minutes, unlimited texts (or a very large amount) and a decent amount of internet.

Orange are ****ing shit, the only phones I can upgrade to are shit phones worse than my current phone!

so I come to you for advice on what phones you have and which companies you are with. I like HTC's, i like the android market but I am willing to go to the iPhone.

I would love a Windows phone, but i understand the apps are shit!

I am also willing to pay a bit upfront for the phone. but not over 75.

UG, what do you reccomend, I have no knowledge of the current phones out there and im sick of going on websites that just tell me all phones are great, I need to hear it from the people!

this and a sim from giffgaff.

if you get the 8GB model and the 10 goodybag and set it up to recur each month it works out to 20 a month over a 24 month period (or 26.66 over 18 months).

you get a good phone plus 250 minutes, 1GB data, unlimited texts and free giffgaff to giffgaff calls each month.

Honestly don't know why anyone has bought an iPhone 5. Many stupid people convinced themselves that the 4S was a worthwhile upgrade from the 4, I suspect a similar amount of stupid people have convinced themselves that the 5 is worth another massive chunk out of their pockets...

Nobodies mentioned Windows Phone 8 yet. Definitely a worthy competitor to Android now, quality of apps is up there, speed of the devices is blistering, features are generally exceptional (Nokia Lumia 920 is amazing).

Seriously worth considering if you're bored of Androids DIY feel or Apples cliche fake wood/brushed aluminium UI bullshit and want a powerful device.

Anyone got any views on the Samsung Galaxy S2? the S3 does look nice but it out of my price range, but i've read a few things that speak highly of the S2 and its half the price. looking at the Nexus 4 though as well

I've got an S2.

It's a good phone and will do pretty much everything you want it to.

I use a non-standard rom so I couldn't really tell you about the newest version of the stock software, but the hardware is solid. Mine's been through the wash and come out with only a broken camera and a dodgy home button. Battery life is quite good (I charge every other night) but that can be affected by the rom.

Because it was a flagship device there's tons of support out there in terms of custom roms, accessories and repair help.

If you get the S2 you shouldn't be disappointed.

Regarding network, I would definitely go with giffgaff. I pay 12 quid a month for unlimited internet and texts, and 250 minutes. Great price for what you get. Don't know about the phone though, the Nexus 4 does seem to get good reviews but some of my mates have Galaxy S2s and they seem decent!

Comparing the Nexus and the S2, the only thing that the S2 wins on is on storage. It has 16GB + and SD card slot in the basic model compared to 8GB and no SD slot for the basic nexus.

Otherwise the nexus has a better resolution, a better processor, better camera and you don't have to wait for samsung or the carrier to update the software. When google releases a new version of android you should be able to get it pretty much straight away.

S2 is fucking awful on stock rom. I sent mine off for repair and they reflashed it back to stock, and haven't been bothered to change back yet. I was shocked at how buggy it was.

+1 for the phablet.

All other phones feel like are ridiculously small now.

I went for the S2 for several reasons, the main reason being laziness. I couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle to change my network.

The S2 is on a cheaper contract though, im saving 5 a month. The phone itself is also twice the phone my current phone is, and i like my current phone, it just lacks memory so i look forward to it.

I did do a lot of reading of reviews and the Nexus 4 and S3 looked really good. I think you could get the S3 for 25 a month (and 99 up front) on 02 if anyone was thinking fo it.

Another question: what are those websites that compare deals and you can get phones off like? They are small websited and you seem to be able to get really good phones on really cheap deals with major networks, but you cant get those kind of deals directly from the network.... anyone know how they work or do they have loads of hidden costs etc... Not that it matters now as my new phone will arrive tomorrow, but jsut curious, because i would have been all over that, but didn't trust them.

I bought mine from one of the comparison results websites.

The one I used was as straight forward as going through the network. They did a credit check and after it was approved the only payments were for the handset and the monthly fee. But then I specifically searched for one of those ones without the cashback deals.

They can undercut the network because the network isn't charging the costs, they charge significantly more and make a profit.

They buy the handsets at wholesale value and there's probably a deal in place with the networks whereby they just provide the sims and receive a percentage of the monthly fee.

Note user here. Fairly satisfied with it, although Note 2 seems to have better touch and multi tasking features if you're into that kind of stuff. S2 is reliable but many seem to be making the move to S3 here?
