Solid State with Pedals or Tube Amp?
I need to upgrade my amp, I use a Marshall MG (I know, awful) for performing with others. I was looking at the Jet City Amplification JCA20H and JCA12S Half-Stack at $500, which is the most I want to spend for now on the amp itself. It looks perfect for what I need it for: nice cleans and an awesome high gain OD for rock. On the other hand, would it make more sense to go for an amp with great cleans and just use pedals for everything else? The fact that the Jet City is single channel is a turn off being that I need to switch between clean and OD in the same song. I really do play a lot of different styles so it needs to be versatile. Thanks for any insight.

look into a modeling amp like peavey vypyr 30 watt would probably be good enough. I use one at my moms place and it seems like it can get pretty loud

You would want the JCA 22h which is a 2 ch version of the JCA20h.
Don't get me wrong the JCA20h is a nice amp, but I really don't think it is what you want. The 20h also does not have alot of gain on tap classic/hardrock is about as far as it will go by its self

Awesome, I had no idea there was a two channel version. Do you know if it handles acoustic-electrics well? I'd rather stay away from a modeling amp, a little too digital sounding.

Single channel amps aren't so hard to live with. You can use a pad (or volume knob/pedal or even an EQ or something set to attenuate rather than boost) to get cleans and an overdrive to kick it over the top for your lead sound. With nothing on you have your mid-gain tone.
With those two gadgets you effectively turn it into a 3 channel amp.

vypyr series besides HD pods probably as good as its gonna get for modeling amps. Not like the old days with digitial processing it has come a long way. $500 budget is tough for a all around good multi channel amp.

I'm currently using a JCA20H and I used it in many different ways. Clean driven by pedals. Dirty by itself and dirty stacked with pedals for REALLY dirty. It's pretty damn versatile if your decent with your foot and your volume
 Of course the 2 channel JCA22H would be even more so. The real question is the drum one. It may depend on the cabinet your driving with it but I found it not quite loud enough for keeping up with the drummer I hang with. He's known for being all loud all the time though. No subtly at all to his playing. He regularly breaks crash cymbals cause he won't calm down and he doesn't use any splash cymbals because no one can hear them over the rest of the band since it has to crank WAY up to compete with the the drums. The whole band also has to wear earplugs and they are just playing in a basement for 7-15 friends. With a decent drummer? It would probably keep up fine. |
