DSL 40C or Jet City 20C?
They are both in my price range, around $500. I play a Gibson SG Special. I'm looking for an amp with good cleans (yeah, Marshall isn't the best, I know), and can keep up with a drummer. How well does each do with a 90's rock tone/alternative tone. I know they nail the classic rock tone. I don't mine using pedals either. Thanks.

I own the Jet City. You're not going to get crystal cleans at drummer levels. The power tubes break up pretty early. It does pretty well for your alt. rock tone.
Someone else will have to chime in about the DSL. I haven't tried one.

There are very mixed reviews from people here on the new DSLs. If you can go used, the old DSL401C was a great little amp with decent cleans. The JCA is not going to give you giggable cleans.

Marshall isn't the best? The cleans on a Major are pretty hard to beat. Nothing wrong with plexi cleans in general really. Plenty of Marshalls have good cleans.

Yeah I heard the new DSL is very bright but has that classic Marshall tone. Do you think it would have enough headroom compared to the JCA? I think finding a used one will be too hard for me, although if I do find one I'll jump on the opportunity. |

I haven't tried the new DSL40C but even the old DSL401 is overly bright if running those shitty Chinese OEM tubes. Nothing sounds good with those things. When buying new amps you have to budget in the cost of better tubes - unless you buy some bootique thing. Most new amps sound like shit until you retube them.

Go to a Guitar Center and play them. The DSL should be able to hold with a drummer at 40w but who knows. It's definitely not a metal amp. Might work for what you are after but you really should try to play it first.

Not the greatest JCM800 but leaps and bounds ahead of what you were considering. Buy it.
