Questions about the Mark IV
Well, I've been bit by the GAS bug. I was talking to another user about Mark IVs in his thread, and now I want one.
Fortunately, one popped up on my local Craigslist for, what I believe, is a great deal. It's a Mark IV on top of a Mesa 1x12 with a 90w Black Shadow speaker. The seller wants $1100. I'm going to try to get it down to $1000 because I live two hours from him (I know--not his problem, but it's worth a shot.) I have a couple questions, some of which are obvious, but I'm asking them for assurance's sake. 1) Is a Mark IV different enough from my Roadster to justify the purchase? I've always heard that the Rectos and the Marks are "different beasts," but are they different enough? 2) Why does the front say only "Boogie" and not "Mesa/Boogie" like other Mark IVs? Is it because of the tweed face vs the black face? I think that's it for now. I'll ask more as I think of more questions, I'm sure. ![]() Pic ![]() Thanks!

From my experience with comparing my Mark III to my two channel Rec ( not the same thing as your situation, but similar) they are such different amps. They really could not be further apart tonally.
And the name thing isn't anything to worry about, that is fairly common.

Thanks! I figured that they were different enough, but I just wanted to be extra sure before I did anything. Thanks for confirming.

They are very different. The Mark Has a ton of gain, but it is very dry and incredibly tight. As a result it doesn't have that exaggerated chug like the Rectifier amps do. I never play mine without the EQ on, and I scoop it quite a bit because the amp has a lot of mids!
When you ordered the Mark IV from Mesa, you could choose what plate you wanted on the front, whether it was "boogie" or "Mesa/Boogie".

It's a great amp. Night and day difference between the two. People use the analogy "sledge hammer" vs "scalpel" which is an accurate statement. Everyone posted great information. It's a pretty good price as it looks in great shape.

It seems better and better every time someone says something about it.
![]() I just noticed something, though. There doesn't seem to be a footswitch. I'm torn now. I may pass on this one until I find one with the footswitch. Or do I buy this one, given the opportunity, and try to pick up an FU-3 of some sort later?

You don't need an FU-3 though. There are jacks for each switching function on the back. Some guys make mark iv footswitches on ebay using that method, vs the 6 or 7 pin XLR.

Unfortunately, I have to put this thread to an end. Both Mark IV's in my area were snagged. Oh, well. My day will come!
