Now the main differences I'm seeing, aside from the pickguard, is going to be the different woods used for the fingerboard (Rosewood vs Maple) and then also the pickups (Burstbuckers vs 490R/498T). Being that this is my first Gibson, I don't have much experience with either of these sets of pickups. The hard-case vs gigbag isn't much of a concern for me, as I'm not a gigging musician at the moment (but does add value)

I will be playing through a Marshall JVM210H, and I play rock/metal.. ranging from Led Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, and more modern stuff as well. Looking for something versatile and more dynamic than my active pickups in my other guitars.



Suggestions are MUCH appreciated.

Id go for number 2. I like the look alot better, and I believe it to be blasphemy to stick a Gibson in a gig-bag. The hardcase is well worth the $100 price difference imo. Gig-bags suck.

personally I like guitar #1. I'm a sucker for burstbuckers! Aesthetically guitar number one is also much nicer, IMO. Very clean cut-natural look. Go to a guitar store and try all 3 out, see which one plays more naturally for you, then buy that one!

I like the visual aesthetics of #2 better, and prefer hardshell cases even though I don't gig- I'm clumsy, my freinds drink, my Border Collies don't give a damn, etc.

But if you prefer burstbuckers, go for that and buy a hardshell.

you guys can all hemorrhage, number 1 is sexy as hell. As an active AC/DC hater, I usually cannot stand SG's, but number 1 is nice. Also, Grover tuners are way better than the ones on the Standard, and I don't like Maple fretboards for some reason, except on Tele's. I'm a weird guy. The only downside is the gig bag, buy a case, mouchacho.

Haha, I feel ya! I think that natural look without the pickguard looks sexy.. and the burstbuckers seem to have a better liking than the other set. The hardcase is worth the difference, but the other thing is that the second of the two options is also a 2011 model, compared to the 2013 model of the top (if that matters much).

MusiciansFriend will not come down any further on the 999.99 model, saying that it's already marked down. They are, however, willing to give the 15% off on the first, bringing it to $764.

Didn't say it wasn't, I just like the second one more.

(FWIW, I'm planning on getting a US Masters Hornet- their version of the SG- and it will be sans pickguard like the first one...but with other features similar to the second.)

Gig bags suck, but as stated before, #1 looks cleaner, and the Burstbuckers are the shizz.

#1 gets my vote.

I'd go with the second one. I like the looks more (no pickguard seems off to me) and I like the pickups better as well.

I'd go with #1. I like the darker looking finish, plus the wood's texture is more visible and the darker finger board enhances the overall look of the guitar. It's cheaper by a substantial amount, and you could use the extra money for a nice case, some upgrades if you wish, or both. And it has 24 frets. You never know when you might need an extra couple frets.

Personally I would choose the second one. There's nothing wrong with baked maple fret boards, they're actually more like Ebony, there's also nothing wrong with the tuners or the pickups either.
If you want a SG that has a truly versatile sound you should buy one with push/pull coil split pick ups, I just got one and it has a real wide range of sounds.

#1 doesn't have a pickguard
#2 has a maple fingerboard, which will be brighter than a rosewood fretboard. The sg is already very thin... I wouldn't want a brighter sound.

Those would be the two issues for me. I prefer an sg with a pickguard but the tone from the maple fingerboard i probably wouldn't like, which would be the only important issue. luckily the choice is up to you my friend.
