How to get the best of my amp
Hello UG, i own Mesa Rectifier amps since about a year. I've had a dual and now i own a triple. I am in love with it, but i feel like i miss something. I am not a 100% in love with the tone and i wonder how could i actually improve it (mods, better EQing, etc.). Anyone can help ? (Btw im using the amp through a mesa v30 std cab).

We can't help if you don't tell us exactly what you want that you're not getting.

Okay, so i'm more of a mid range guy and i can't push it to the point i want because it gets kinda muddy. Also, it's a bit too noisy to my taste and my gain isnt that high (5-6). I'd want to be able to push it more gain wise and get more definition in the tone.

Are you running an OD in front?

sounds like you need a tubescreamer type of pedal i recommend green rhino, Also alot of high gain rigs pretty much require noise suppressor ns-2 can be had for cheap.

I'm not running any kind of pedals in front of it. I'd like to fill my needs without buying any pedals. Like modding or idk.

then you are doing it wrong... i'm just gonna be honest and pull some number out of my ass but lets say over 90% of mesa users use some kind of boost/overdrive/eq pedal to tigthen up there sound or to give a amp more gain. No amount of eqing the amp will probably make you happy if the mids aren't making you happy i'm sure a overdrive with mid hump will do the trick. |

also wtf you mention this in your first post. A simple mod would be to use a boost/overdrive to make things right. Volume up gain off tone to taste boom probably instant gratification. If this setup doesn't work then this amp isn't for you. |

for a mid hump pedal? probably green rhino by way huge or badass overdrive by mxr the 100hz knob is really key to fine tuning your setup. It adds or subtracts bass i believe its a -+12 db's. both can probably be had for around 100 bucks or so. cheaper options digitech bad monkey, mxr classic overdrive, delta labs tube driver, among many others. |

Are you wanting more High Mids or more Low Mids?
As for a boost pedal, it is my experience that while they can help out...they're just a band aid. You can try another EQ pedal such as an MXR. I'm a big fan of mids in my tone as well but prefer high mids as to me Low mids just provide too much mud and usually get cut out of a mix at a certain point anyways.

deff try an OD pedal of some kind in front. You can get Ibanez TS-9's used for $45. I use the GFS Greenie (3 voice TS-9 clone) and a Digitech bad monkey. Both were <$50 new and I like both better than the TS-9, but I did not want to cut too much bass ![]()

OD for the tightness (and mid hump as an added bonus) noise gate for the noise, 10 band eq to fine tune your tone to taste.

Whack a TS in there, I'm using a Blackstar HT100. About 2 weeks ago I finished a TS808 clone, it's opened up so many more possibilities and tightens up my sound a lot. I'm now building another one for a lower gain boost.

I really like the asymmetrical clipping in the Boss SD-1. For a more traditional style TS, the Way Huge Green Rhino and MXR GT-OD are both great units.
Get one of those, and a Boss NS-2 (Or ISP Decimator G String, if you feel so inclined to), and you should be set. Running either of those in the 4 cable method will cure the noise problems introduced by your amp and the OD (as they are characteristically noisy). Keep in mind that most if not all high gain amps will have some noise - that is just an unavoidable fact. You'll want a noise gate regardless of anything to cure that.

I was having EXACTLY the same issues with my RA (well, except for the noise) and my TS saved the day man! No rat and no DS-1, just a good overdrive!
