The material (that achieves a negative temperature) needs an upper-bound energy limit. Due to most materials being able to accept an infinite amount of kinetic energy this is very unlikely. However the material can be manipulated into having an upper-bound energy limit by the methods in the experiment. The trick to this experiment is all in the material used.

I'm not - I'm equally confused by the part I quoted as you are But I don't mean 'younger' in terms of human aging; I mean things appearing chronologically younger as they are becoming more orderly than disorderly (entropy dictates that everything moves from order to disorder, over time, including the universe and everything in it - so, as depressing as it sounds, there is theorised a time where all the stars and planets in the universe will have died and transferred their energy so that energy is balanced across the universe and there is no chance of us surviving in that kind of situation with any current technology).


I'm really tired though, and I'm probably not making much sense



I understand the experiment itself, but perhaps through lack of understanding another concept or element to this - I cannot relate any of it to entropy, though I am the first to admit that I was only introduced to the concept of entropy through a BBC4 doc with Prof. Bryan Cox (Wonders Of The Universe) and am sure there are other aspects that weren't mentioned or that I have forgotten. Much to my current displeasure, I didn't study physics to a high level at school; I took a combined science program at age 15-16 (GCSE's, over here) to allow me to take two languages at school, and didn't study any of the sciences in higher education.

I believe they're talking about the entropy of the system, which is free to go up or down, unlike the entropy of the universe, which always increases.

I'm going to bed now, so I don't really have the time to explain it all. But this article explains the entire experiment in an analogy that is easy to understand (It also explains how entropy is related.)
