Question Guitar on early Beach Boys songs

How did David Marks/Al Jardine get that "woody", percussive tone on the rhythm guitar? Is it just palm muting?

"Surfin' Safari" is probably the best example of what I'm talking about.

Step 1 - get a strat, use the bridge pickup

Step 2 - have a nice clean, loud fender amp with a buttload of reverb
