NGD! X-mas goodies

So the combination of a x-mas bonus and generous girlfriend had me accumulate quite the gear this holiday season.

First up is my first ever tube amp (upgrading from line 6 spider):

It's a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III Limited edition tweed

I went to a guitar store and just asked them to bring me all the reasonably priced (under $1500) non-metally amps. I played a 5W blackstar which I almost convinced myself to get. It was an excellent practice amp as it even had a head phone jack. What turned my off about it was the lack of spring reverb. It's reverb sounded really digital and gave me nightmare line 6 spider flashbacks.

I almost got a voxAC15 limited green edition. I actually originally came in to try this particular amp. A lot of my favorite bands run through a vox and I loved the sound I heard in youtube reviews. For whatever reason I could not dial in a good tone for apartment sound levels. If I cranked it a bit I got the beautiful shimmery tone they're known for but I knew I could never play regularily at these levels without my girlfriend leaving me and/or being evicted.

I tried a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III silverface and was able to recreate that shimmery tone I loved on the Vox. It's a two channel 40W amp and as such I could get a lot of great sounds at reasonable volumes. Not sure of the science behind this as I'd expect the 40W to be harder to overdrive than the vox15. I'll read some stickies and find out later.

I decided to get the fender and as I was checking out I noticed a tweed Fender that I hadn't tried. I asked what it was and the salesperson said it was a limited edition of the amp I was buying. The main difference, apart from looking super sexy is the a 12" 8-ohm JensenŽ P12Q speaker. I then noticed fender had a $100 off for any purchase over $750 - the reg amp being $739, the limited being $839. Being too tired to try it after 2hours of trying amps, I made a game time decision and had the limited edition rung up.

I don't remeber what the regular version sounded like but the limited is amazing. I mostly play cleans and it awesome with them. That said, I really how the tubes break up for a minor distorted sound. I've heard a lot of complaints about fender distortion but unless I have no taste for distorted sound, I think this amp does it well. Perfect for bluesy rock or classic rock sounds. I can match some Black Keys tones really well too.

The back. Tried to get the tubes to glow but it's hard to flail on a guitar whilst taking a picture on a shitty camera phone.

I've run out steam but my other holiday goodies include a taylore 314ce.

I was going back and forth between taylors, martins and seagulls. I really wanted to try an artist series seagull but no stores carried them. I couldn't deal with the thick martin neck so I threw those out. The 214 taylor was way to trebly for my taste and the 314 just felt right when I played it so I got that. Or I should say I said "Thank you" to my girlfriend who then purchased it as a x-mas present. My first real acoustic if you don't count my 70's entry level no name classical I have.

Love how well integrated the dials are on this. Haven't seen an acoustic/electric makes these look so good. And it sounds great through the tube amp!

Lastly: A Boss DD-7 digital delay.

I got it soley for the looper function and I've been trying to recreate this for several days now.

The family:

Realize my reviews of everything but the Fender amp was short. If you have any questions, ask and I'll answer!

Yeah - I found that the biggest jump in sound I got was going from the 214 to the 314. The 314 has a much warmer sound which I love. It also looks and smells amazing. I've gotten some weird looks from my girlfriend when she catches me sniffing it... and then asking her if she'd like to smell my soundhole. Nothin' wrong with that!

That amp is gorgeous! Being the tweed junky I am, I'm going to have to hunt down one of those when I can get the cash together. Get a tweed strap for the tele!

nice score. sounds like a no-brainer since the more expensive one actually ended up cheaper. looks cooler and has a better (alnico) speaker... win-win, most likely.

fwiw, more wattage means it's harder to get power tube distortion. it doesn't affect how hard it is to get preamp distortion if your amp has a gain control and master volume.

Yeah... The $8 strap on the $1000 guitar (Yamaha Pacifica 1511MS Mike Stern sig) is a little embarrassing. That said, so are my guitar playing skills.

Ahhh... This adds up. I'm taking this pup out to my friend's house in the burbs this weekend. I plan to set it up on the deck and crank it. I'll let you know the distorted power tubes sound then I guess. Either that or I'll let you know how it feels to get a ticket for disturbing the peace.

Um, excuse me the fender ones are $15 ..........

If you want a good uber high quality strap I'd say go for a get'm get'm, I have one straplocked to my red strat, reasonably comfortable and durable. Not that you asked for strap suggestions.

If you want something boutique made of bengal tiger fur with kobe cow leather ends, check out TGP; I promise you, they have all the gear snobbery you could ever want.

I kid, I kid
