I'm in a band and we're struggling to come up with a name. How did any of you in bands come up with the names of your bands? Should we just try to find any random words or phrases that sound cool? Should we use lyrics or other names inspired from other artists/songs? Should we just make a list of 100+ things that randomly pop into our heads and hope that one or two stand out?

If you want to suggest any, we play metal. We're gunna eventually do covers of When All Light Dies by Trivium and something I can't remember by Sepultura. I'm trying to steer us into a more progressive direction. Our vocalist does deathcore vocals like growls and highs and all that, but he's the only one in the band that actually likes deathcore. I myself like progressive and avant-garde metal, and some thrash.

Also, this is my first forum post, despite having this account for a year or two, so if I've screwed anything up then blame that.

If you aren't creative enough to come with a band name, I'd question whether listening to your songs would be enjoyable and fresh. No offense intended, but when you think about it it makes sense.

Pick a name you and your mates like, and fuck all who don't.

The joys of coming up with a band name... You need something that is unique and clever with out sounding dorky and tryhard. There's really such a fine line between stupid and clever. The thing that I find with band names is that it's so easy to come up with great band names that other people would love, but when you need one for your own band, it simply isn't going to happen.

I have a blog on my profile with a list of 300 or so band names. They are all pretty goofy, mostly bad puns and obscure references (or a combination of the two: nobody will ever figure out where The Fear of Mice came from), but there are a few gems on there that may appeal to you.
