Should the US military begin drafting?

I used to be of the opinion that drafting was bullshit and morally reprehensible, but someone here on UG made a great point to me a while back, and it is this:

A citizen draft would end the War on Terror faster than any hippy peace protest. When it's other people going off to fight and die, we are content to support a war, but when it's you, or your kid that's being sent off, then it becomes a problem. I think a military draft would do a lot to halt American intervention in foreign affairs because people are more likely to do something about a problem when it directly affects them.

What do you guys think?

I'd be exempt so yes please. The ladies might not find my skinniness so repulsive once there's no one left but me.

So you're suggesting implementing the draft to end the war through public opinion?

I don't believe in forcing people into a position they don't want to be in.

Basically, yeah. We'd be a lot less anxious to start wars if we could be drafted to fight them.

interesting idea. i'd have to think about it. i voted oppose anyway

i'd be exempt from the draft in a heart beat so i feel like i'm not in much of a position to support it.

Fuck no. On top of that, the idea of using a military draft to scare people into NOT supporting a conflict is ******edly immoral and downright disgusting.

Well, what happened during the Vietnam war? They protested and people still got drafted. The question is, will it work?

Surely there is better ways to win the battle of public opinion than to restrict rights just to provoke outrage.

How so? I think it merely asks them to provide the service they are calling for. It would make people think twice before supporting a pointless conflict.

Did we stay in Vietnam?

Isn't the US military actually looking to downsize the number of troops from current levels?

When was the last time the public called for a war? Pearl Harbour?

that's funny. my teacher said that in high school once and that's always been my reason that i wouldn't mind conscription. that combined with potentially forcing some ne'er-do-wells to get their shit together in some fashion.

i think it would be a good thing if it causes the US government to exercise prudence when picking their fights.
