NGD: Ibanez J Custom RG20126

So I was thinking about the best way to write this NGD.

The problem being that I donít usually visit the EG section, and everyone I know is in GG&A, Iíd figure Iíll leave it here. Just that sadly though some of the old guard like the detail in my NGD posts, it usually doesnít garner many views.

Anyway, here's the money shot.

The Ibanez J Custom RG20126. Needless to say, its the top of the line RG that you can pick up right now.

So hereíre some basic specs:

Neck Material:*5pc Maple/ Walnut
Neck Type:*Super Wizard J.custom
Body:*Alder body/ Flamed Maple top
Frets:*Jumbo frets
Fingerboard:*Bound Rosewood
Inlay:*J.custom Tree of life inlay
Bridge:*Edge Zero bridge w/ZPS3
NeckPU:*Seymour Duncanģ Jazz Modelô Neck
BridgePU:*Seymour Duncanģ Custom 5ô
HW Color:*CK
Scale/Length
648mm/25.5"*
Width at Nut: 43mm
Width Last Fret: 58mm
Thickness 1st Fret: 17mm
Thickness 12th Fret: 19mm
Radius: 430mm

With the technical stuff out of the way. Other than one preview by someone on UG that just tested it, I donít see any reviews on UG. There are some comments online, I donít see anything detailed.

Anyways.

This is one smooth guitar. I like it lots. Itís not the greatest... the honour of which goes to my PRS Custom 24, which I can only describe as an accelerator, it just makes anything awesome. It feels right, sounds like a nuclear detonation (in a good way), plays great etc etc.

What this Ibanez is.... is that is feels great. Not as great as my PRS, but itís pretty damn awesome! Considering that my PRS cost S$4,800, and this costs S$3,800, Iíd say its goddamned value for money, considering its feel. (Review here: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1469792)

Why do I say its damn value for money. Just check out the finishing, the final touches, the attention to detail, the build, the appointments. Everything is great!

Unfortunately, you canít touch it here, but hereís how iíd describe it. When I picked up my PRS for the first time. It felt so right, it was like having your hands on all the porn stars in the world all at once. It felt like it was made to sink into you and never leave.

In contrast, the Ibanez felt like every other RG the moment I picked it up. It didnít feel awesome. Anyway, I then proceeded to pick up an RG3570Z (http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-RG3570Z). Notice that Iím comparing the J Custom to the next down guitar. Essentially Iím comparing 2 of the highest end builds.

The moment I picked up the Prestige. There was just no competition at all. The Prestige felt cheap and toy-ish right next to the J Custom. In contrast as I played the RG20126, it just kept feeling right.

When I compare this to my PRS right now. Iíd say the PRSí build quality wins hands-down, however, the 20126 is only a hairís width away in terms of build quality and feel.

So overall review
Likes
Its got an alder body with a flame maple top.
Thatís something different as RGs tend to be basswood bodies. I really dislike basswood as I find them to be muddier and lacking in clarity compared to other woods.

Appointments and build
As I mentioned, this guitar is well built.
The neck pocket is tight, setup is good, frets are well rounded, all parts are sturdy. The whole guitar just feels sturdy.

Dislikes
Sound
Unplugged, I can tell the guitar should sound better, brighter, clearer, with better definition. I think Iím too used to the Bare Knuckles sound that Seymour Duncans sound a little muffled to me.

I may replace the pickups, but as of now, I think they are pretty awesome still.

Personal opinions
Iíve done some research on the current trem I have. It seems that its got its pros and cons.

I changed my strings just this morning, and I can say one thing. The trem is no better than a Flyod Rose in terms of time to change string. However, it is more stable, as FRs tend to cause fluctuation in individual string tuning, you end up going back and forth tuning and retuning.

In contrast, this trem isnít as responsive as a FR, and maybe because of that, tunings of individual strings are a bit faster. I usually take 1 hour to restring a new guitar with my strings of choice, adjust the spring tension, check for intonation and fine tune.

I managed to get my Ibanez tuned up and ready to fire in 35 minutes. Quite good by my books.

I think I do have other thoughts on the guitar, but as seeing Iíve only had it for about 24 hours, Iíll keep my thoughts to myself for now, lest I over comment and then decide my original opinion isnít quite correct.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I just noticed that some pictures are a little grainy and fuzzy, apologies guys. The iPhone probably isn't the best camera around, but I'll try to get new shots uploaded over the next few days.

Oh yeah, the Tree of Life inlay was a major selling point in the guitar. Steve Vai-ish without being OTT.

I think one gripe I have is that the maple top is so thin compared to my PRS... its about 35% of the size of the maple top on my PRS. I'd have liked more maple top on this thing.

HNGD!

FWIW, you can easily adjust that trem to be more FR-like if you wish. One way is by changing the spring tension to where there is play in the zero point area. The other way is by removing the zero point stop bar (which is probably the preferred way).

You lose a bit of tuning stability obviously, but if the zero point "notch" bugs you, you can adjust it out.

Yeah.

Get those coloured strings off it. No wonder it sounds muted.

Get some proper strings on there.

The iPhone is totally capable of getting awesome shots, just got to have the skill to do it. Case in point:

Regardless, looks awesome. I've always wanted to try a J-Custom, but have never gotten the chance. Honestly, I have a hard time investing that kind of cash on a guitar, because I don't really feel like you're getting that big of an upgrade over something half the cost... but damn do they look pretty

+1 to that. I had colored strings on my BRJ for like a week and it was gross

Absolutely gorgeous! HNGD!

I'm also going to vote to get those nasty-ass strings off of there. Gross. They sound terrible, feel terrible, and on a guitar like that, they look terrible.

I've never really been a Ibanez guy myself, but that thing is damn sexy.

Did you get a chance to play it before you purchased it?

I mean, for a $4,000 J Custom, you would think that falling in love with it from the get-go would be important.
