Useful Utensils

Hey guys, you may have noticed this is my first ever thread, well anyway, I've been playing for a bout 1-2 months on a crappy Fender Strat rip-off, and I think it's time to get a new rig, ever since I was about 7 I wanted an SG, you see us Australians listen to AC/DC a lot. So, I saw it, and it was love at first sight, but then I went to my local music store, and noticed they have an imitation of a higher-end model of the SG, possibly a Gibson, I think the brand that made it was like WTD or some crap, it was a 3 letter acronym, I think, written in glossy writing on the head, it was originally $560 but she offered it to me for $300, and I've found an Epiphone SG Special 2011 model for $230 with free-shipping online, and I really don't know what to get. I'll post more details on the other mysterious imitation guitar next time I go to that shop.

Was it possible it said "LTD" on the head stock? If so, look at the pups. If they are flat black with the word EMG on it, skip over it. Because of the active pick-ups it will
a.) Make you mistakes prominent, and you will grow frustrated
B.) You just don't want actives for ACDC.

I suggest get the epiphone and get the pick-up changed when your hearing develops.

yeah, the Epiphone low-end guitars aren't great, their SGs start to be great at the g-400. Between an epi special and an LTD (which is likely), the LTD will be of better quality. You should still try both of them to see which one you like better.

Any LTD SG is better than any Epi SG, I had a SG400, it was crap. Sold it as soon as I could so I wouldn't loose any money.

I personaly really don't like EMGs a whole lot, but they will be fine AND they WILL be a lot better than the pickups Epiphone uses. Epi pups howl and feedback too easy in a very bad way.

^Just because yours was bad doesn't mean they all are. Epi g400s are very good guitars, and I have myself never played a bad one.
Also, looking at his budget and knowledge (absolutely no offense meant), I doubt TS has a very good amp, which means no matter the pickups, the sound won't be amazing and either way, they'll have to be replaced eventually.

I don't know what the other guitar is but the Epi SG you mention is the cheapest, bottom-of-the-barrell SG model made. I wouldn't get that.

Thanks guys, sorry for the low amount of information, I'm quite new to the guitar, but I have had somewhat of an amount of musical experience through out my life, I've been playing drums, which arn't going to benefit me that much, but are still a musical instrument. Anyway, I have quite the low-end amp, and I should definitely get a new one before getting a new guitar. I'm probably just going to save a lot, so I can increase the budget for what I get. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Well, I do remember that the (I'm assuming it's an LTD according to what you've all said) had 4 knobs, and a larger pickguard, which means it's obviously a higher-end SG model.

Get yourself a hot-ass Viper-1000 with slick Seymour Duncan passives in them, pair it with a high-gain amp like an Orange and you'll have perfect ACDC tone.
